Do the umpires eat too many cheesteaks when they go to Philly? The last two nights has featured some of the worst umpiring I've watched in the last 10 years. That play is right there... in broad daylight... and the ump still misses the call. Awful.
Its 2-1... play it under protest. I really wouldn't mind replay for plays at the plate... not for calling balls and strikes, but plays that have visually indisputable evidence (like that one) should be reviewed.
2 games in a row we've gotten hosed by the home plate ump in this series. Oswalt clearly stepped towards 3rd last night and Biggio was easily safe. The tag wasn't close.
Biggio was safe, but I don't want to see ump reviews in baseball. I hate waiting for them in football.
The only reason the wait is so damn awful in the NFL is because of the insistance that the on-field referee go under the booth and review the call himself... if they had a review official in the press box (like they do in college), it works much-much faster. You also have far more contigencies in football... such as where to place the ball, how much time to add to the clock, and re-setting the downs. Also, half of baseball is waiting... whehter it be pitching changes, batters calling time, step offs, pick offs, pitch outs, meetings at the mound, etc. Replay actually lends itself better for baseball since there are natural start/stop points between pitches. I'd much rather sacrafice a bit of waiting for the right call... especially on plays at the plate, close catch/non-catches in the outfield, and fair/foul calls on HR's.
Girardi (a manager last year) basically saying that the scouting report was pretty easy to formulate against Lane... and he hasn't adjusted yet.
Its fun to see Ausmus as co-manager on his off-days. Hopefully he'll want to stick around the bench for awhile after he hangs it up (but he probably would prefer surfing in San Diego).
