Start with Gattis, Vet Bat? C, Fisher, whoever. A DH-type on a short contract is available every year around the deadline.
Orioles:We want to trade Britton. Astros: Here's a fair offer. Orioles: Okay. Psych. Orioles: We want to trade Machado. Rest of League: Here are some fair offers. Orioles: Psych.
Most underrated players at every position https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/...underrated-players-in-mlb-and-its-underrated/
Yep. I suspect Bregman will be a 5 WAR player by the time it’s said and done. Imagine if he’d been allowed to stay at his natural position of SS; a 23 year old SS posting a 122 wRC+ is rare, only 4 SS with more than 400 PA in 2017 achieved that (Correa, Seager, Cozart, DeJong).
Peter Angelos is a total d******d. The guy makes a living off asking for the moon in personal injury cases. Negotiating with him is a complete waste of time.
If Moustakas has to settle for a 1yr deal, I’d like the Astros to offer the largest sum. Worth losing that draft pick. Still keeps a window open for Tucker in ‘19 and no long term payroll to cloud free agency
I'd be down with that, unless it reduces the chances of us signing Darvish. Getting another Ace beyond Keuchel is more important.
I don’t believe they have any intent of signing Darvish, it’s either a ploy to drive up his contract and take a major market team out of Keuchel contention or just to get a feel for what the market is like for Keuchel and Morton
Oh I think the Astros would pull the trigger on Darvish, but it will be at a number the Astros think he is worth.
I’d still prefer waiting till next season with McCann, Sipp, Gattis, etc coming off the books and a huge kick in revenue. Astros could be looking at having 60-70 mil to spend. I feel certain Morton and Marwin can be retained for 25 mil in salary/year and Astros can offer 25-30 mil for Keuchel or someone of similar productivity in free agency or have more time to evaluate which prospects they deem expendable. K Tucker, Fisher, Moran and Reed are all still very much capable of deserving spots in LF or DH to replace Gattis. Marwin could be plugged into either role. Astros could probably have 10-15 mil leftover to find a cheap, defensive minded catcher and to tinker with the bench, pen. The Verlander/Darvish types are always there at the deadline. PATIENCE GOT US THIS FAR. This is still the most complete team on paper Whitley can be plugged into the back of the rotation and have a few years to develop into a frontline starter. Buakakas, Martes, C Perez, H Perez could all be deserving arms in the rotation eventually.
I wouldn’t be too certain about Morton as he has stated he might call it quits after the 2018 season. Also, are you speculating $25 million a season just for Gonzalez? Or were you adding Marwin and Morton together to be $25 million a season? Unless some very weird stuff happens, the Astros will not be paying Marwin $25 million a year.
Marwin is likely to come back to earth this year and will be asking in the $40M/3yr range. Morton will either retire or take a 1-2 year deal in the $10M/yr range. I’m sure Houston is keeping in touch with Darvish only from an opportunistic standpoint. I LOVE Darvish for <$120M. I hate him for >$160M. I’m sure Luhnow feels the same. I saw another comment today from Reid Ryan that winning the WS means Houston can support a Top 10 payroll. That means we can probably expect them in the $160-180M range, which means they likely have the money for a big contract. Whether that’s an extension for Altuve, Springer, or Keuchel, or a free agent like Darvish remains to be seen. But the prevailing theme is that Houston is in an extremely enviable position: -Above average farm with 2 potential superstars in the upper minors -A deep MLB roster projected to be the best in the majors even without any more additions -Payroll flexibility
I don't know the exact number but the Astros as a franchise made between 30-40 million extra for winning the World Series I think we make moves if not dsrvish couple of top players on bargains
