Wade Davis' BB/9 is alarming to say the least. I'm not at all convinced that he's the answer to our bullpen woes.

    Stros are uniquely talented.

The DH doesn't even bat in a run-driving slot in the lineup.

Davis is concerning due to age and velocity dip, but he is the top closer on the market.

The Cubs didn't bring back Chapman, so they could be adverse to paying a closer top dollar. They also have luxury tax concerns. I still think he re-signs though.

Interesting to hear bat first, good defense describe a backup catcher. I'd guess his signing is really to be the #3 catcher that we can option back and forth, which we couldn't do last year with Stassi.

Lorenzo (age 28) has been playing Cuban Pro-ball since 19 y/o.

He's mostly been an .800 OPS guy whose BB/K ratio has really improved over the years, although he hasn't played the past 2 seasons. He can somewhat steal bases, but I'd just rather he not be a liability on the bases like McCann. He seems to have better defense than McCann.

The only reason Ohtani would come to the Astros is the potential to win a ring (which could be a compelling argument for him, but the Dodgers can make the same argument.) But it seems more likely to be a West coast team (shorter travel time to & from Japan - reputedly why Ichiro signed w/ the Mariners) or the Yankees (reputation of the team in Japan - reputedly why Hideki Irabu signed) and a team who could give him a bigger bonus.

Gattis is also eligible for free agency after next season and McCann is a free agent after 2019.

Another pricey DH/1B/Catcher option I would kick the tires on would be Carlos Santana.

Santana doesn't catch anymore and he just declined a qualifying offer.

Not sure he would be on our radar now.

Why replace Gattis with a more expensive Gattis that doesn't player catcher for a minor offensive upgrade? It seems like making moves for the sake of it.

I was unaware that he has basically stopped catching since 2013. My case was that Santana is a left handed hitter who draws a lot of walks and hits for power. You undersell Santana's value compared to Gattis- compare the WAR stats. Anyway, the point is moot if he doesn't catch anymore.
