Carlos Lee may win more games for you than Derek Lowe. Either way, the Astros next year are a team struggling to be 500.

I know it's a longshot but if the Astros really want to move him I think they could find a way to convince him to waive his no trade clause.

I know the Astros are going around .500 again next year but a rotation of Wandy, Oswalt, Lowe, Norris would like real solid. Finding a solid outfielder is much easier than finding a solid start pitcher. It won't happen but this team needs to find creative ways to make this team better since they said they will lower payroll.

It won't happen but I remember a few years ago the Fred McGriff didn't want to waive his no trade clause for a trade to the Cubs but the Rays finally got him to do it. I doubt Lee would do it since he has rance close by and really seems to like Houston.

Our team sucks, we are rebuilding, if you want to win waive your no trade. Maybe something like that? You never know how a mind can be changed. You'd still have the problem of who needs him enough to actually want his contract. The combination of the two makes it nearly impossible.

yeah, if we don't tell him that we suck, how would he possibly know?

the 'stros have said they're cutting payroll...if he isn't willing to waive it now, i'm not sure he'll ever be. nothing wrong with asking....but my point is he holds all the cards.

Carlos Lee to New York Yankees

    1.They don't worry about salary.
2.Carlos> Damon or who ever they sign for left field.
3.He will produce even better in that lineup.

To bad he probably wouldn't waive it.

According to Footer's twitter(sorry can't post tweets from work so someone please post confirmation)...

Stros offered arbitration to Valverde but declined on Miggy, Hawkins and Brocail.

On both McTaggart's and Footer's Twitter pages. Apparently they are in negotiations with Hawkins still.

Really disappointed they didn't offer Hawkins. I wanted another draft pick.

    booooooooooo

would love to get the pick, but would hate to be saddled with him.

    evidently, the Astros disagree.

wonder what t-shirt he'll order next year?

They need *someone* in their pen next year. They like him, he's been outstanding since he's been here. Most any other FA closer-caliber reliever you replaced him with would have pick compensation of some type.

Offering him wouldn't have hurt their chances of retaining him. Not offering means they were afraid he would accept.

Potential replacements that would cost nothing?

    Jason Isringhausen
    JJ Putz
    Eddie Guardado

    Here we go again....

    Rangers, Astros Eyeing Brett Myers
By Tim Dierkes [December 2 at 8:23am CST]
The Rangers and Astros have interest in free agent righty Brett Myers, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. Myers, 29, posted a 4.84 ERA in 70.6 innings this year, working around hip surgery. We learned last month that the Phillies won't be re-signing Myers, who is open to starting or relieving in 2010.

For the Astros, using Myers in the rotation would probably mean bumping Felipe Paulino. The Astros' rotation actually isn't too bad, but added depth would be nice. The Astros could use back-end bullpen help as well, with the statuses of Jose Valverde and LaTroy Hawkins up in the air.

Crasnick names Myers and J.J. Putz as pitchers on the Rangers' radar; they're apparently hoping to sign a pitcher to an incentive-based deal. The Rangers have good rotation depth, so Myers might fit better in the bullpen.

I'd be happy with Myers, Sheets, Penny, or Bedard. I assume though that we will go with Roy, Wandy, Bud, Felipe, & Brian.

first i thought you wanted them to go with the young guys...

then i thought you wanted them to go after a free agent pitcher...

    now i'm just confused.

Youngs guys yes, but I think we need a vetern 3 or 4 just not the injury prone guys we have been targeting under Wade. Myers to me is injury prone besides being an overall jerk, guys like Wolf or Garland would be way mroe ideal on a 1 yr deal in the 5-6 million range. Guys like Myers are going to break down or be no good IMO similar to Hampton/Chacon/Ortiz. The only injury guys i'd go for would be Bedard or Sheets because there ceilings could be pretty high if they stay healthy. Otherwise go young and give Paulino/Trinadad/S.Perez the shot.

That one makes no sense. We could have offered 2.8 mil which is 20% less than 3.5 mil I think he makes. He could have closed games incase we don't get Valverde and it would have made other teams not want to sign him.

I guess if he accepted arb and asked for $4 mil they don't think he would be worth that much.
