Heck, I'd even take Jason Smith over Michaels...at least he brings the comedic/entertainment value of wondering whether he is going to ever get a hit http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=400136
In other News apparently Lyon had minor surgery http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4901272 I understand in the end we saved money from resigning Valverde/Hawkins but the more I ponder this signing the more I regret the Astros doing this. Reminds me to much of Matsuis contract.
The Brandon Lyon signing is regarded as the most ridiculous signing off the entire off season. Exactly who were we bidding against. Between that and Pedro Feliz, I sometimes wonder why I am still an Astros fan. Oh yeah, one more thing, anyone else think we overpaid for Brett Myers? I certainly do
Yes I would of rather had Jon Garland or Jesus...... spent 5 million extra on an injured Sheets than pay 5 million to Meyers a mediocre often injured wife beating starter. Should of given Lyon 3 years/10million MAX. You don't spend that amount of money on the bullpen of a team in the current circumstances as the Astros.
Eh...1 year deals dont really bother me because if he doesnt work out, we arent stuck with him for another season
Lyons and Feliz were stupid. I don't have a problem with Myers though. The guy has been an average or above-average pitcher basically every year of his career. It's nice to fill the rotation with a reliable guy like that in the #3 slot, especially with a bunch of questionmarks at the back end of the rotation.
Lyon signing was terrible because it was for 3 years. Giving Mohehler $3 million dollars was equally as bad cause the guy sucks and you could have gotten him for a minor league deal if you really wanted him bad. I don't have really mind the Feliz signing because it's for one year. However, I probably rather have spent that money for a starter like Jon Garland or Doug Davis. Signing Melvin Mora for $1.3 million dollars would have been a much better value the Feliz at $4.5 million.
What exactly is unreliable from Myers? His only really bad year was 2004. He gets you an ERA in the mid-4's, decent strikeout numbers, consistent WHIP, etc.
Myers comes with alot of baggage (attitude, wife history, his inconsistency in performance) that many teams were probably scared away by. I've always been a fan of his, thought he's got some pretty good stuff, but I'll admit he doesn't always play up to his abilities
He was hurt last year, no? I am no Brett Myers expert, but I believe his numbers have been tracking down over the past few years, which is odd since he entering his peak years. I reliable #3 starter in his peak years should have been able to land a 4 year $30 million contract. Yet, effectively, Myers signed with the Astros, a bad team going nowhere fast, for a one year $5 million deal. That was my point. I hope Myers is as reliable as you think. That way the 4th and 5th starters will be the lone unreliables in the Astros starting rotation.
You have to at least admit that Myers is an upgrade over our #3 "unknown" going into last year in Mike Hampton.
none of those signings are as dumb as the fact that they are going into the season with tommy manzellas as their starting ss and jr towles as their starting catcher.
pudge was signed pretty late last year. I wouldn't quite say manzellas and towles are done deals as 150 game starters or anything
hope you're right, but not sure that anything but crap is out there anyway. also, before a stickler comes in and b****es, the "s" at the end of his name was a typo.
hahaha i didn't even notice it. i just copied and wrote what my actual thought was.. now i feel like the idiot. (i'm always one to b**** about spelling of names)
Wow this came as a surprise. Article on Mills/Astros Was actually on the front page of the MLB Section on ESPN http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove09/columns/story?columnist=crasnick_jerry&id=4904979
