Garland is no better than Myers and he'll most likely get more.

Garland has been at least a consistent workhorse for the team he's with pitching around 200 innings every year
And is a proven 3/4 or 5 in a rotation

No team that I am aware of has ever managed to run the same 5 starters out there all year. People have off years. People you have every reason to expect will pitch 200 innings tweak a knee in the spring and end up with only a couple of starts. Most likely you need 7 or 8 guys. Planing for only 5 is a bad idea. That is how you end up depending on guys like Runelvys Hernandez or Yorman Bazardo for extended periods.

Myers, Feliz, Lyons and Lindstrom...I am actually getting a tad bit excited. I don't think we will be the Yanks but the Cards are losing Pinero, you can never count on the Cubs and the Brew Crew lost Cameron although Wolf and Hawkins will still keep them right there.

Does anybody know if the Astros will be losing any draft picks for signing Myer? I wish they would stop trying to sign has beens and praying they turned it around playing for us. They got lucky with Hawkins, but thats about it.

Has beens? Myers is 29 years old...29. It isn't exactly like he is Mike Hampton.

He had hip surgery last year. If he passes thew physical, he should bounce back to his usual numbers which are adequate for a #3 or #4 starter.

If you recall, he is 2 seasons removed from being a middle of the rotation guy for a World Series team.

I'm still surprised the Cardinals dished 7years/120 Million for Matt Holliday.

    That's unreal.

Really- screw that a**hole. The ONLY reason he wasn't prosecuted for punching his wife was that she wanted the charges dropped. Multiple witnesses saw him do it. You wanna root for someone like that? He's a hothead who's had confrontations with reporters, even teammates (remember him and Hamels getting into it?). This will turn out to be a bad signing, mark my words.

I can't classify this as a bad signing when the Astros were looking terrible before him.

and not a whole better after signing him. But the Astros are 5 million dollars poorer.

I am so glad the Astros are addressing their average starting pitching, while leaving their below average hitting alone. At least, they will have better defense at short next year.

He hasn't had a winning record in 3 years. His era is horrible. Like I said has been. I wish they would sign an up and coming player or a player thats coming off a winning record instead of being cheap and signing has beens to sign some pennys

If your going strictly off wins and losses then he was 4-3 last yr and 12-7 in 06 but you really shouldn't do that because in 08 he was a middle of a rotation guy for a World Champion who pitched pretty good ball in the playoffs and in 07 he was forced to the bullpen because the Philles had NO ONE to close games and he did that fairly well so the win/loss record is deceptive. He will give up hits and homers thus his ERA will be above 4 but he is suppose to be a 3 or 4 not a 1 or 2...give us quality innings and give us a chance to win most starts and that is fine by me. What young pitching would you like them to get, there is NONE out to get?

    Reposted for truth.

To go only by win loss record is incredibly misleading.

To call a 4.50 ERA "horrible" for a middle of the rotation guy is just inaccurate. It is possible that you just don't really know what you are talking about.

Last year a 4.50 ERA would put you at league average in the NL. I cannot see how league average is the same as "horrible."

LOL...I know it's probably the brick red blood in me but come on its not that far of a stretch to believe Lyons and Lindstrom cold be a dominate back of the bullpen duo, Feliz give you above avg "D" with enough pop to make up for his bad OBP and Myers give you quality innings. Like I said not saying we're going to win a 100 but I can see 86-76 and once you get in that range you never know. I am being half full instead of half empty on this one otherwise I might go crazy during the summer.

Myers is probably the first actual upgrade to the team - the others were just replacing last year's players (and saving money in the process, which is good but doesn't improve W/L next year).

Feliz and Manzella or whomever is not better than Tejada/Blum last year.
Lyon & Lindstrom are not better than Valverde/Hawkins.

I think Lyons is the only bad signing, just because we overpaid. The others are ok.

I'm hoping we can see a lot of the young guys. That would be exciting.

Can't argue with those points but normally when a team exceeds expectations players who you didn't expect much from tend to make a name for themselves. While Feliz/Manzella won't be as productive offensively then Blum/Miggy they should be a VAST improvement defensively and while Val/Hawk were better last year then Lyons/Lindstrom you hope the new guys will be more durable while producing similar numbers this year.

I really look for another step forward from Pence, Bourn to continue adding to his game, expect Puma to be a tad more consistent even if his numbers decline a bit and Castro/Manzella/Maysonet along with any ST surprises to step up in their own ways.

86-76 would make me a happy Stros fan.

I'm actually excited over the Myers signing, he's shown over the years he actually has some STUFF unlike Brian Freakin Moehler who is determined just to make it mediocrity with that constant chipping away with the 2-seamer, hoping batters keep it in the park

So our rotation looks like this:

    1. Oswalt
    2. Wandy
    3. Myers
    4. Norris
    5. Mohler

I'll give the Astros credit though, they're making moves and signing guys unlike last year where they did nothing.
