We all knew the Astros would pass on Chapman. I have to admit that Wade's logic is sound. It makes sense to spend 15 million developing multiple players versus putting all your eggs in one basket.

However, I still do not buy the logic that the Astros do not have money to spend.

Astros still talking to Myers(ESPN Insider)

The Houston Astros are keeping tabs on Brett Myers as a possible back-end-of-the-rotation addition, reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

The Astros don't have much money left to spend, so they would probably have to sign Myers to a one-year, incentive-laden contract. But Houston GM Ed Wade has an affinity for former Phillies, and the Astros think Myers would be a nice fit behind Roy Oswalt, Wandy Rodriguez and Bud Norris in their rotation. At the moment, Felipe Paulino and Brian Moehler are penciled in as Houston's fourth and fifth starters.

The Astros held a private workout in mid-December for Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman before announcing that they were withdrawing from the bidding, primarily because of the price.

I'd rather have Meyers slotted in our rotation then at the back end of the bullpen.

I'm far more concerned about our starting rotation than our bullpen, his impact would be much larger if he could pitch effectively and this allows Gervacio and Wright to continue coming out of the pen.

    Oswalt/Rodrigez/Meyers/Norris/Moehler

At least seems somewhat respectable assuming they can all stay healthy.

Brett Myers? Only if he pushes Moehler to the pen. Paulino and Norris have to get their starts, since they might be part of the team in two years when the Astros will start to be good again. Moehler and likely Myers are band aids until then.

HOUSTON - Major League Baseball sources told FOX 26 Sports Friday the Houston Astros have reached a contract agreement with free agent pitcher Brett Myers.

Sources told FOX 26 the agreement is pending Myers passing a physical.

Myers was 4-3 in 2009 after pitching 70.2 innings.

His season was limited because of injuries.

Astros general manager Ed Wade, who has not been available for comment, is very familiar with Myers.

Wade was the general manager of the Phillies when Myers was drafted by Philadelphia in the 1st round of the MLB First-Year Player's Draft in 1999.

In 8 years with the Phillies Myers was 73-63 with a 4.40 ERA.

In 2008 Myers was 10-13 with an era of 4.55 covering 190 innings.

I LOVE the Brett Myers signing. It's a lost risk move with a potential high reward. At worse, he is a solid 4th or 5th starter. I am sure it's a one year deal with a bunch of incentives. He still has good stuff and is only 29 years old. Wandy, Oswalt, Norris, Myers should be locks for the rotation. Felipe Paulino, Wilton Lopez, Brian Moehler, Yorman Bazardo, Jose Valdez, Gustavo Chacin, and Josh Banks should compete for the 5th spot and the best man should get the job no matter how much money they make. I like all the moves Ed Wade has made this offseason except signing Brian Moehler. Good move.

Agree, Myers is a good 4 and an ideal 5 hopefully Paulino finally gets "it" and becomes at least a dependable 5 so Moehler can be the long man in the bullpen. Actually the rotation isn't half bad if they can stay healthy...

    1) I anticipate Roy having a major bounce back year 15-16 wins 3 ERA
    2) Wandy is what he is 14-15 wins 3 ERA
    3) Norris will continue to improve 12-13 wins 3.5 - 4 ERA
    4) Dependable back of the rotation guy(if healthy) 10-12 wins 4 - 4.5 ERA
    5) Hopefully Paulino can start to show more consistent flashes 9-11 wins 4-4.5 ERA

Great Signing, it appears with our off-season signings the team is headed back to focus on pitching.

I keep saying this but if the Astros declined Moehler's option, they would have saved $2.5 million dollars. They could have used that money on a much pitcher like Jose Contreras, Vicente Padilla, Braden Looper, or Brett Tomko. All of which will likely have to settle for 1 year deals with incentives.

If Tejada isn't receiving any high offers I don't see a reason why we don't make a push for him.

I understand we are going for younger and cheaper, but Manzella does not seem ready to start and that could be very risky going into the season with an unproven shortstop

If the price is right go for him.

I don't think this will ever happen. No team looks at Tejada as a shortstop no more. Manzella will never hit that well at this level but he has a good glove and is CHEAP.

Heck, put him at 2nd. It keeps Manzella and Feliz on the field to man the left side. The right side wouldn't be great, but Lance is a solid defender. Miggy's bat is certainly better than Matsui's.

    From Tag's twitter...

brianmctaggart Myers reportedly one year at $5 million with option for 2012

WOW...that is alot but I guess someone like Pinero would have cost 8-9 million.

10 - 14 wins and an ERA around 4.5 isn't as cheap as it used to be, I guess. Expect high strikeout and home run numbers...

I wonder how much Jon Garland is asking for.

If he gets less than 5M I won't be happy
