Agree 100% but during Lyon's presser Wade did say it gives them more flexibitly before the start of the season....so I think he might have a move or two still to come and a cheap SP would be the target IMO with guys like Doug Davis, Garland and even Sheets who might find themselves in a similar situation Wolf did last year having to take a cheap 1 year deal.
Not really. I'm more worried about a reliever on a multi year deal with very mixed results and has three years to stay healthy rather than one year.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?id=4740695 [rquoter]Top 100 players of the decade 17 Lance Berkman Berkman has never really gotten his due, even though he's been consistently outstanding; when the Astros were good, he was the only "Killer B" who thrived in the postseason. 23 Roy Oswalt Oswalt's numbers are practically identical to Roy Halladay's; the difference is that they spent the entire decade in different leagues, and you know what that means. 30 Miguel Tejada Playing shortstop is a tough job? Nobody played more games in the 0's than Tejada, who successfully fought off every attempt to move him to third base. 42 Roger Clemens It was an odd decade for The Rocket, but let's not forget that he went 107-50 and won two Cy Young Awards (neither of which he really deserved, but Clemens did pitch well before finally retiring for good). 50 Andy Pettitte He didn't quite earn this spot, but Pettitte did win more games (148) in the 0's than anyone -- Randy Johnson's No. 2 -- and he also built a 12-5 postseason record in this decade. 98 Carlos Lee Other former Astros players/prospects 10 - Johan Santana 16 - Bobby Abreu 21 - Curt Schilling 33 - Jeff Kent 41 - Pudge Rodriguez 72 - Carlos Guillen 85 - Freddy Garcia
i'd be a big fan of that signing.. and then even moreso if they find somewhere to move matsui's salary
I'd love to have him, though it probably means another move will have to be made to make room. I wonder if they are interested in any other non-tendered players.
I'm really glad that the Astros don't think they need starting pitching, when the Phillies get Roy Halladay, and the Red Sox get John Lackey......Get somebody, anybody!!!
While a number of teams have already reached out to pitcher Chien-Ming Wang to express interest in signing the former New York Yankee, it's possible that he won't sign for months, according to his agent, Alan Nero. Wang, who was not tendered a contract by the Yankees by Saturday's deadline, is going through injury rehabilitation and is expected to be ready to pitch early in the season. Wang will meet with Dr. James Andrews in early January, and after returning to his homeland of Taiwan for a two-week stay, Wang will return to work out in Arizona. Six teams -- three from the American League, and three from the NL -- made contact with Nero on Sunday through e-mail to express interest in the pitcher. Nero said early Monday that he expects to hear from more teams in the days ahead, and he did not rule out the possibility that Wang could eventually re-sign with the Yankees. Wang won 19 games in 2006 and again in 2007, but he was hurt while running the bases in 2008 and missed the rest of that season. Should we take a shot? if is only 5mil a yr.
Why is our team full of scrubs now? I haven't been able to bring myself to watch these last couple of years but... Pedro Feliz? Seriously? This is a vaunted offseason acquisition? A career .254 hitter with a .717 ops? How is that worth even $1 million, let alone 4.5? They could bring up some random scrub from the minors and get that kind of production.
RSox got Lacky, Phillies got Halladay and the M's got Lee so we go out and sign.... Astros Re-Sign Jason Michaels By Tim Dierkes [December 14 at 4:39pm CST] The Astros re-signed outfielder Jason Michaels to a one-year deal worth $800K, tweets Alyson Footer. Michaels, 34 in May, hit .237/.322/.430 in 152 plate appearances while playing all three outfield positions. He gets a $50K raise over last year. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
Astros sign 17 y/o LHP and invite P Gustavo Chacin to ST http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/...t_id=7808912&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou
agree...but come on, it's only 700k. i think they'll be ok designating him if someone better comes along
i'm a fan of the Chacin invite. It wasn't THAT long ago that he was an up-and-coming prospect in Toronto..
If they thought that they could get that kind of production along with what he brings defensively, they would have done it. Fact is that Chris Johnson is not likely to bring you that kind of production, and he will never be anything more than below average defensively.
This is exactly what I like to see. Take Pedro Feliz's $5MM and go sign 15 of these kids and hope one or two pan out into something. At the end of the day, I bet you'll get more of a return to the Astros from those 15 kids than you will from one year of Pedro Feliz in a year we're going to suck anyway.
The prospects and young guys being moved around in the Halladay/Lee blockbuster make so jealous we wont make moves like that with some of our assets
