I will say Hawks ERA was only 2.13 but considering the rest of the numbers and his age...Lyons was possibly cheaper per year too, good move in my book.
I could see 3 years for 12 million which is fine by me...overall good day in my book by trading for Lindstrom and singing Lyon for about 10 million cheaper then what keeping Val and Hawk on board.
I believe that when you sign a Type B free agent, you don't give up a pick. The team that looses the player gets a sandwich pick that didn't exit before the player was signed.
Age is probably the key here. Hawkins in Houston was nothing short of great. Lyon has been up and down over his career. Last year was great, but the previous year was not good at all. Fortunately, he's been pretty good in 3 of the last 4 years. Will be interesting to see how much they paid.
10:35pm: Rosenthal hears from one source who says Lyon received a three-year $15MM offer, presumably from the Astros.

So you replace Valverde and Hawkins at a combined much reduced cost and get younger at the same time. Good move IMO. Keep it coming, Wade.
From JJO's twitter... Ortizonbaseball Expect Lyon and Lindstrom to compete for closer's job. They combined for 18 saves last year. Lyon saved 3 this year, but 26 in 08.
MLBTR: Rosenthal says the Astros agreed to sign Lyon for $15MM over three years. That's too much of a commitment in my opinion, but congrats to Lyon and his agent, Barry Meister. The Tigers get a supplementary rounder (not from the Astros) in next year's draft.
They did get younger and cheaper. But Lindstrom was terrible last year, and Lyon was terrible in 2008. So it remains to be seen whether they got worse or better. Cheaper and younger is not a big deal if they end up combining for an ERA of 5. It will be great if they combine for an ERA in the low 3's (Valverde and Hawkins combined for an ERA in the low 2's, but that's unrealistic to expect).
Apparently it was 3 years 15 Million for Lyon. That doesn't seem like a great bargain. But I guess nice pick up.
Lindstrom wasn't as bad as you think... http://blogs.chron.com/sportsjustic...oustonchronicle/sportsjustice+(SportsJustice)
