To touch on the "clutchness" nonsense brought up earlier, since I have a hunting trip to head out on in about an hour: Jeff Bagwell's BA/OBP/SLG/OPS Career: .297 / .408 / .540 / .948 August: .298 / .415 / .545 / .960 Sept/Oct: .314 / .421 / .541 / .962 RISP: .308 / .448 / .550 / .998 As PH: .375 / .475 / .656 / 1.131 Xtra Innings: .314 / .486 / .545 / 1.031 *W/in 2 R: .295 / .413 / .525 / .938 *W/in 1 R: .297 / .419 / .524 / .943 *67% of his RBI & 64% of his HR came when the Stros were b/t 2 runs up & 2 runs down. 49% of his HR & 51% of his RBI came when the Stros were b/t 1 run up & 1 run down. 44% of his HR either tied the game, gave the Stros the lead, or won the game.
Let's talk Cards pitching staff...is that ok in this thread?? I didn't wanna start a thread in the hangout for this. And since they've been our biggest division rival for the past 10 years or so, it seemed right. if they don't sign mulder, what are they gonna do?? who will they have?? my understanding is they're not really pursuing suppan that hard. so carpenter...and then what??? i know they're talking about moving 2 bullpen guys to the rotation.
"The list is dwindling, but I think ideally we'd like to get two starters," Jocketty said. Yeah, good luck with that, Walt. Carpenter Anthony Reyes Adam Wainwright (if Izzy is healthy enough to close) ?? ?? They're talking about Mark Redman, Carl Pavano, Joel Piniero and other scrap-heap types. Weaver & Mulder may still come back.
The fact that Weaver and Suppan were so damn good for them (and they essentially picked those guys up when nobody else wanted them, especially Weaver) probably has them pretty confident in Dave Duncan's tuteledge. Thus, I don't think they need to panic... just pick up some arms that aren't going to break down for you, let Duncussa work their magic, and they should get some decent results. New Busch is a pretty decent pitchers park, and Carpenter is still as good as it gets. That being said, this team still only won 83 games last year... I see similiar results forthcoming (even if that means they luck into the playoffs again, and win the World Series again).
Why are you trying to make a name for yourself by pissing everyone off? Can't you just make friends the normal way?
was it ever proven julio lugo hit is wife? seems like the astros were a little too fast on the trigger (as always) on this guy... not that lugo is a superstar, but the astros seem like they are designated as the talent pool grab bag for the rest of the league
Most teams can put together a list of "ones that got away." (even though that really shouldn't be applied to Lugo.) I consider it a testament to the organization... to have that much talent that slipped away, but still remain competitive.
That's true for every organization. The talent pool grab was the Montreal Expos. Those guys had hall of famers and superstars get away. (Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Vlad Guerrero, Moises Alou, John Wetteland, Andre Dawson, Larry Walker, Tim Raines, Gary Carter, etc.. etc.. They were the minor league franchise of the rest of the league and its sad to think how good they could've been if they just spent a little money. And not to mention, these weren't prospects that they traded away or didn't evaluate properly. These were proven big leaguers that made it to the expos franchise that they just gave away due to money issues.
yes its a testament to our grade A farm system and yes we've stolen a few, but it just seems more of them get away than the other way around...
a lot of these moves are because we have guys we'd rather be playing...when we let lugo go it was largely because adam everett was ready. we traded carl everett for him and he came highly touted. it was time for him to play. it didn't help when his wife said he beat her around.
good point. i guess that's what the purpose is.. well, for better or for worse, he's made some sort of name for himself..
so jerry crasnick says that it's "widely suspected" that Philly will trade Jon Lieber for bullpen help. Would you take a shot at him as a 4th starter for someone like Nieve? He's always won a good amt of games... but I feel like he's given up a lot of long balls, too...so I don't know if he'd fit in here. And I guess we already have the "vet presence" with Woody. But an intriguing thought at least..
So... what Astros news will distract us from the Texans' ineptitude as well as T-mac's back, this week? Anybody hear anything? Even the slightest tidbit? I guess if something is going to happen for another pitcher, its best that we DON'T hear about it before it happens.
Well, they did settle the lawsuit for collecting on Bagwell's disability. No numbers were mentioned. Hopefully, this gives them the extra cash to go after Suppan.
Lieber has this tendency to be depressingly average most of the year, then to nut up in September and look almost like an ace. I'd not give up Nieve for him. He'd probably be better than our other #4 options, but seems unlikely to be worth the cost in players. We need a strong bullpen, too.
I agree. Plus, the last 2 years, Lieber has given up an average of 30 hr's. Typically not a great mix with MMP, though he does have very good numbers there...2.74 era, .98 WHIP, .224 BAA in six games (2-1 record...both wins were complete games). I just think that Nieve is going to win a rotation spot and will do well.
