"I would say there's a real strong chance that we wouldn't trade the four guys who started for us in the postseason," team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said on Monday. "And then beyond that, I'd have to say that you listen to what people have to say, but I can't give you any odds on that."

Article also says that Detroit wants a young lefty reliever, which the Stros don't have to offer, but if you can get another team in the deal....

Suppan is very good, Stros could use him. I wish the stros would start looking into Japanese pitching too. They have quality pitchers

I'd love for the Stros to go out and get Suppan. However, like you said, if his agent plays it smart and waits till after Zito signs he'll probably be out of our price range. Aside from our management's opinion on Hirsch and Taylor, I think the fact they still have a decent number of pitching prospects made it easier for us to give up Hirsch and Taylor. Although Hirsch was likely the most prepared to step into the rotation, we still have Albers, Nieve, Wandy, and Sampson who have some experience at the big league level and some guys with good potential in Patton and Barthmeier.

Adding another a solid number three pitcher would make our rotation formidable, but I'm not sure if I'm ready to give up on Scott unless we're getting some quality pitching in return. If we are able to pick up someone good for him though, I'm not that opposed to letting Lane have another shot in RF. Although his stats in winter ball haven't been that impressive, the guy was really solid in 2005 and he's a much better defensively than Scott.

I dont want lane at all. Hopefully lane and ensberg can be traded and we can sign huff and suppan. That would be so sweet.

i dont think id like to see us give up Scott unless we got one of those 4 pitchers they toted out there last year....i think Maroth is too much of a question mark to trade scott

I agree, if we trade Scott we need someone we know is going to be solid. From what I've read Maroth struggled after he came back from being injured at the end of last season. Looking at his stats he only worked a few relief appearances in September, which didn't seem too bad, but he was left off the playoff roster. He seems like he was pitching pretty well to start the season though.

Maroth's secondary numbers were terrible last season. He gave up alot of hits (.295 avg against), and alot of homers (11 in 53 innings). His strikeout rate was poor. And these numbers were indicative of what he's done so far in his career. And of course, he's coming off the injury. I'll pass. Detroit has other good trade commodities, but Maroth isn't one of them imo.

Not really, his '04/05 were pretty solid, and he was pitching *great* before his last start & subsequent trip to the DL. He came back in September & struggled out of the pen, not surprising coming off of surgery.

Pence/Lane & Maroth vs. Scott and the 2nd best of Sampson/Albers/Nieve/Wandy?

I like Scott & all, but his performance next year is a pretty big question mark. Of course, so is the performance of either of the guys I mentioned above as possible replacements.

While it would be nice, the rotation doesn't have to be set in April. There's always in-season stuff that could be helpful. Dairy Queen/Drama Queen Roger might still come back. Wonder how Mulder's rehab is going?

If he's healthy, Maroth's somebody I'd think the Stros would look into, and he could provide pretty much what the Stros need - another 200ish quality innings. As I've not scouted Maroth, nor do I have his medical file handy, unlike some I'm not going to look at a statsheet & pronounce anything definitive here, it's just something to look at.

He allowed batters to hit .288 in both 04 and 05. Less than 5 K per inning every season of his career. Combined ERA from his 04/05 seasons (the "pretty solid" ones) was 4.5. You can say a statsheet's not definitive, but the bottom line is he wasn't very productive in any of those years, and you'd be foolish to expect anything far removed from his career norms next season.

You and I obviously differ greatly in what we expect out of a 3/4 starter. 200 innings of 4.5ish ERA is about what teams look for. And that 4.5 ERA was in the AL, albeit in a slight pitcher's park (not nearly as extreme after they moved the fences in).

His OPS allowed over 04/05, ~775, would put him alongside these names on the '06 list: Matt Morris, Tim Hudson, Cliff Lee, Miggy Batista, Jeff Suppan, Andy Pettitte, and Jon Garland. Not bad company.

Suppan is an innings eater and a clutch pitcher. He keeps his team in games because he has good stuff, not great stuff plus, he is a competitor.

Depending on price, he may worth a risk .. ;)

Yes, he's decent. But in my opinion he's a number 3 or 4 caliber pitcher who's gonna get number 1 or 2 type money.

Yeah we're dealing with a pitchers' market. Demand for quality exceeding supply.

    1) There's no such thing as "clutch"
    2) In one of the years fans like yourself were b****ing about Bagwell and saying he wasn't "clutch", he was in the top ten in WRISP.
    3) Therefore, your take is accurately described above by Buck. Bull****.

Don't even try. Next he'll give his patented, "solo home run while the Astros were down by 5 or up by 8" line (which is also BS).
