The Astros believe there's still a chance that they'll get Jon Garland from the White Sox. The belief that the White Sox got cold feet because of concerns over Taylor Buchholz's health seems to be widespread. Buchholz, though, says there's nothing wrong with him, and if the White Sox still don't want him, it looks like the Astros like Garland enough that they'll consider working around it, perhaps by offering Fernando Nieve or Matt Albers instead. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/Home_MLB.aspx
Screw pettitte and NY. Sick of the town and their crap. Don't let the door hit u andy, take clemens with you. I would rather have Garland anyways, our team needs to get younger and FINALLY GIT RID OF AUSMUS!
I dont want Garland if it means giving up 2 of our young pitchers. Or, if we have to give up 2 pitchers to get Garland...then we have to sign Pettitte too. Otherwise, that's too many holes to fill up in the rotation, which means that our season is going nowhere.
I don't think it says that anywhere.. I think it's Taveras + someone...and they've been negotiating the pitcher
I would be happy if we kept Buchholz. Wouldn't be averse to trading Nieve or Albers. But I don't want to give up Willy T. How bout we give them Albers, Nieve, and Lane? Could that get it done?
Why would they want to trade us a solid SP for two unproven pitchers and an OF that NOBODY wants? You have to give up quality to get quality. This deal for the Sox would be much more about getting Taveras than the pitcher. We don't WANT to give up Willy, but we realize that we likely have to in order to get a good SP.
If i'm giving up Taveras in a package deal, I'd at least want someone better than Garland. Take away his big run support the last couple of years, and he's been mediocre to say the least his entire career. We should package Pence, Lane, Albers, and Patton and make a play for Dontrelle Willis. He's a Cy Young caliber pitcher who's still only 24.
I think the Marlins would take that one. I don't think we would ever give up a package like that for him..
Astros have signed Backe to a $545,000 deal for 2007, even though he won't be back next season. That's a classy move on the Stros' part. They could have just cut him loose and try to sign him prior to 2008. I hope he makes a strong comeback. We need him for 08. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl//4389826.html
Taveras is not that good... if he was, the White Sox would have jumped on this deal regardless of the other guys involved.
Agreed. Taveras could go next year at hit around .200. His base running stinks, instincts suck, and isn't a good leadoff hitter. Astros added outfielder Mike Rodriguez to the 40 man roster last month and he does everything better than Taveras other having his as good speed or arm.
I still think Josh Anderson will get the chance before any other prospect does to be the everyday CF.
I agree completely. I'm so friggin' tired of athletes taking the highest offer, then saying they did it because that team "wanted me more." No, Pettitte/Beltran/Mike James/etc., they PAID you more -- that's all. Just be a man and admit it that you went where the money was better.
how much will teams pay for Willis? I mean say we land Willis. I'd like to extend him as soon as possible so he doesn't see the free agent market.
Zito + Boras = No deal from the Astros. Hence why the Astros are open to the idea of moving Willy now. Boras is his agent as well. Astros will not be doing business with Boras again.
too bad that sucka has to pay state income tax there, and that NY has a higher cost of living.... so if it was for the money... it wouldn't be THAT much more if you think about the marginal benefits. plus, no wife to bang every day, cold A$$ weather, eh... you know?
I think to say the Astros won't want to deal with Boras again is a little shortsighted. It's a business first, and Drayton full understands that. If Boras has a client the Astros covet, you can bet Purp will inquire.
