Willy could be in AAA next year. If you're not packaging him for pitching (ie - Dontrelle), there's no sense to simply get rid of him because he won't be starting next year. Frankly, Willy could use more seasoning... work on drawing walks and getting extra base hits.
I think at this point Willy won't go back down to the minors. If the Astros cant find a place for him, a team like the Marlins or Devil Rays could use a young guy like him. He'll be in the MLB somewhere
I wouldn't dump him for scraps... if he's part of a bigger deal, then go ahead and pull the trigger... but otherwise, there's no point in getting rid of him just so that he can stay in the big leagues. He can still become a very valuable player for this team in the future... and the guy is still very very young (hell, look how long it took Matthews Jr, his potential replacement, to develop).
Yeah, i think he could be a valuable part od this team but if we decide not to use him for a couple years, there may be some other teams that would want to use him as a starter. I'm sure some teams would be willing to give up some players for Willy
From SI.com http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/11/08/bargains.busts/index.html Bargains & Busts Top 20 values on the market -- and eight to avoid Busts: 1. Carlos Lee, outfielder. He's a threat and he can hit, and he'll get his money, quite possibly even from a National League team (the Astros, Cubs and maybe even the Mets will be bidding). But he looks like a DH waiting to happen, and that wait might be shorter than you'd imagine. 3. Gary Matthews Jr., outfielder. Give the guy credit for his superb '06 season. But be forewarned, he's had only one big year. He'd be better off staying in Texas with hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo but it doesn't look like that's happening, not when someone's going to open the coffers and pay like crazy for someone who may turn out to be a one-year wonder. 4. Jeff Suppan, starting pitcher. He made himself millions in October, when he was a playoff hero and political pitchman in Missouri. You couldn't turn your TV on in St. Louis without finding out how he and Kurt Warner really dislike stem-cell research. But I digress. The smart money says never to pay for one monster month when there's a whole career to weigh. Sometime in the midst of his heroics we started hearing how he might make "Carl Pavano money.'' I suppose that refers to $10 million a year given to a lifetime .500 pitcher. Just hearing that name might give teams pause, however. My two cents: Both Suppan and Jeff Weaver might be wise to stay on Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan's program.
I'd have loved to have him, before the playoffs jacked up his price. We could use a guy we could absolutely count on to be average in the #4 slot in the rotation.
yesterday on sportscenter peter gammons said that carlos lee is most likely gonna play for the astros
For all who want Aramis...he just opted out. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2656998 He wants a 6 yr deal
He also said at one point that it was guaranteed that Carlos Beltran would be re-upping with the Astros. Gammons is good but his intel really isn't that different from what every other writer gets.
Glad to see Ramirez re-signed with the Cubs. Now let's get Lee and a decent starting pitcher, move Scott to RF, bring back Andy & Roger, and i'll be quite happy about this team.
This guy was under the "bargains" section. 20. Richard Hidalgo, outfielder. He took the year off to clear his head. But he's still only 31, and not all that far removed from being a $10 million-a-year player.
How likely is it that the Astros can acquire Vernon Wells? I know it requires a trade but if he is on the market the Astros should be all over him. He has a nice bat and plays a gold glove caliber center field. I hope that we have a realistic chance of acquiring him. I know we will have to package talent for him but I think he is young enough that he is worth trading for.
Without question I think Roy and Berkman are off limits. They are the core of the team. With that said what do you think a more realistic proposal would be to the Blue Jays? Also when would you see this trade occuring?? During the Baseball Winter meetings perhaps?
Depends on whether they are looking to cut salary or get fair value back. If its the latter, we dont have the goods. If they were looking to just rid themselves of Wells, then perhaps a couple young pitchers, Willie/Burke might do it
