That's straight from Footer's recent mailbag. Just speculation, but Dunn's desire to play in Houston isn't new. Last time Dunn to the Astros was brought up (2005), ex-Reds GM Jim Bowden asked for Roy Oswalt + 2 other players off the 25-man.
Because he'll hit the FA market at age 29 only 1 year later than he would have and with $31M in the bank. His contract covered the last 2 of his arbitration eligible seasons ('06-07 @ 18.5M) and has a club option for '08 at 13M.
yeah, because lord knows, the LAST thing the astros need to do is add a 26-year old slugger with a career .893 ops and three consecutive seasons of 40+ homers.... yeah, that has "disaster" written all over it. FWIW: lee is 30, has a career ops of .835, and has never hit more than 37 homers in a season. soriano is also 30, his career ops is also .835, and his 40+ homers once in his career. so, you'd laugh, huh?
So, you'd really entertain trading Oswalt, one of the most dominating pitchers in the NL, for Adam Dunn?
I'd laugh my ass off and then fart into the phone. There isn't a player not named Albert Pujols that I'd trade for Oswalt.
I would. Hysterically. If you're the '87 Red Sox, do you trade Roger Clemens *and* prospects for Don Mattingly? Do you even do the deal straight up?
I dont see the Dunn thing happening. Cant see the Reds trading him within the division...and there's no shot of us trading Roy
sorry; misread verse's response. i was speaking in general terms, re: dunn, thought he was too. no, of course i wouldn't deal oswalt for dunn. i deal oswalt for absolutely no one.
FYI:Roy has a full no-trade clause, as does Lance. Dunn's not coming to Houston until he's a FA, I'd think. Ric, on Lee vs. Dunn (which is largely, if not completely, hypothetical): Lee: much more contact, more hits, 12ish more GIDP/year Dunn: bit more power, 50 more walks, 120 more Ks Depending (a bit) on how the Huff/Ensberg thing plays out, Stros also don't need another middle of the order lefty. In fact, they're desperate for a righty. Defense is about a wash; Lee's the much better baserunner (Dunn's slower than Huff, which is hard to do). Given the needs of the Astros as currently constructed - and taking into account that you'll most likely be giving up 3-4 good young arms for Dunn - which makes more sense?
Dunn's K rate and holes in his swing make him a real danger to be a poor player in the playoffs (if he ever gets there). Combine that with his awful defense (albeit at a low-risk position) and I wouldn't trade Pettitte for him, much less Oswalt.
Incorrect. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/s...75&PHPSESSID=67810c54b4fb2334c6f8596b52ae746a To be fair, Roy is the best RHP and Johan is the best LHP. It's all in good fun, of course Roger pitched great but Roy was the best pitcher in that he contributed more to the team.
