I hope that Wesley Wright guy can pan out. It would be nice for once to have a lefty-specialist on the team that is being paid to pitch for his skill rather than which arm he throws with.
I don't know for sure, but I think he has options left, which might mean that he starts in AAA so that they don't have to cut someone else.
Traitor. I've been waiting for Jose Cruz Jr. to make this team for a decade... he's a HOMETOWN HERO!!! If he doesn't make it, I'm following whatever minor league team he latches on with...
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7812638/RHP-Chacon-could-join-Astros-rotation The Astros, pursuing another veteran option for their rotation, are close to signing right-hander Shawn Chacon to a one-year contract, according to a major-league source. The Astros depleted their rotation depth during the off-season, including three young minor-league starters, in trades for shortstop Miguel Tejada and closer Jose Valverde. The addition of Chacon will make them less reliant on their less-accomplished rotation candidates — Chris Sampson, Felipe Paulino, Jack Cassell and Runelvys Hernndez. Sixty of Chacon's 64 appearances with the Pirates last season were in relief, and he finished 5-4 with a 3.94 ERA. However, he has been used primarily a starter in five of his seven major-league seasons. Chacon is 37-46 with a 4.89 ERA in 119 career starts and 6-12 with 36 saves and a 5.39 ERA in 135 career relief appearances. He has pitched for the Rockies and Yankees as well as the Pirates.
I thought Trever Miller did a decent job as lefty specialist in 2006. Granted last year was a stinker but there was a while where he did a solid job. He was a huge step up from Mike Gallo.
I'm a huge step up from Mike Gallo. I'm a righty and have never pitched in my life...even in softball.
I'll never forget Gallo's last week with the Astros. First, there was the game in Pittsburgh where the winning run was on second with one out, and the Astros had ordered an intentional walk to whoever the batter was... and Gallo followed by airmailing a throw on an intentional walk over the catcher's head, allowing the runner to reach third and score on a subsequent sac fly. A few days later, he plunks Eckstein in the head in a similar situation in St. Louis. I was at the game... Busch fans were going crazy booing... until I explained to them what happened in the Pittsburgh and the unfortunate state of pitching that is Mike Gallo. Sadly, they understood... and of course, the Astros went on to lose the game that inning. IIRC, he was released the next day.
Patton may yet bounce back but maybe they unloaded him just in time? I guess time will tell. <a href="http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-osnotes0220,0,2248999.story">Patton slowed by ailing shoulder</a>
That's exactly why this offseason was an ideal time to unload him. Patton still had some of his hype from 2006, and he had the title of "top prospect" to go along with it because the Astros' system is so horrible. But for his velocity to dip as much as it did when he approached a true starter's workload was a bad sign for his long-term durability and viability as a starter. Patton regularly threw in the low 90s, often touching 95. By the time he was in AAA and in Houston, he was under 90 and progressively dropped even further. I'm certainly not saying he can't pan out, but it was definitely a bad sign and led to the scenario where the Astros were looking to deal him while his value was still fairly decent.
Perhaps the Orioles would also like to trade for one Carlos Hernandez. The guy has a stellar curveball and a plus fastball. Plus, he is young and shows a lot of potential.
The Stros knew about it last fall, and the O's knew before the trade: Patton, one of the main pieces in the Miguel Tejada trade, came to Spring Training with a sore left shoulder, an injury Baltimore was well aware of when it decided to cut bait on its four-time All-Star shortstop. Andy MacPhail, Baltimore's president of baseball operations, said that the Astros were up front about Patton's condition and cooperated with the Orioles to the fullest extent possible. The southpaw has seen physicians from both teams as well as an outside specialist, and a source close to the situation said that all three diagnoses reported the same thing. Patton apparently has a problem with the labrum in his left shoulder, but surgery still appears to be a well-worn contingency plan. For now, the Orioles expect him to start the spring slowly and start the season on time. "Their team physician and our team physician spoke, and they traded records," said MacPhail, explaining the process. "We were cognizant of the different issues, and it had an impact on how the deal was put together." ... Patton said the shoulder pain developed sometime after his second big league start and never really went away. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp...d=2381262&vkey=spt2008news&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
Nice find, Buck. I can't help but wonder if he's hiding something there. His steady velocity drop last year was alarming, to say the least, and I'm suspicious if a medical issue played a role. It would certainly make sense.
