Quoted completely out of context. He called him an idiot for publicly disclosing organizational information, not because of his baseball knowledge.

It's pretty applicable in any context.

Damn, that deal just raised the price on Iguchi. I don't want to give him or any of these 2nd basemen 6 million a year for 4 years.

Disagree. Law's one of the better analysts out there, and one of the only guys from ESPN that is even remotely bearable (damning with faint praise, I know).

Give iguchi a 3-4 year 4-6 million per year deal. He give you a little pop, a little speed, defense, decent obp and i think he's gonna get you anywhere from 12-20 home runs with the crawford boxes. He could be another table setter along with bourne for pence, berkman, lee.

All you jon garland trade guys can quit your crazy proposals, they traded him to the angels for orlando cabrera. The good news is that they are our of the running for iguchi now because they re-signed juan uribe two weeks ago. He had a list of seven teams that he would go to assuming the mets and sox were two of them, that means its down to 5 teams. (Astros, Padres, Colorado, ????, ????) Its looking closer and closer that he might chose houston.

I'd be psyched about Iguchi. Does seem to be lining up that way. And four years of Castillo was way too much.

Bummed about Garland. I thought he was one of the best available arms on the trade market.

EDIT: This does show that the asking price for a #2 or #3 will be high. For us to go out and get a good SP, we're probably going to have to give up at least one top prospect in addition to a Scott/Burke/Qualls.

Kaz Matsui our new second basemen?

And your new second baseman appears to be Kaz Matsui.

GM Ed Wade apparently was on the verge of a deal with second baseman Kaz Matsui Monday night. According to the Rocky Mountain News, the Rockies expect to lose Matsui to the Astros.

If the deal is completed, Wade will have accomplished one of his major off-season goals. He'd also be adding speed, defense and a proven big league hitter. Matsui, 32, hit .288 and had a .342 OBP for the National League champions last season. He stole 32 bases.

Matsui's arrival probably means Wade will attempt to package Chris Burke and Luke Scott in an attempt to land pitching help. In his first off-season as GM, Wade has added these significant pieces: CF Michael Bourn, RHP Oscar Villareal, utility man Geoff Blum and now Matsui.

His first choice to play second may have been Luis Castillo, who re-signed with the Mets on Monday for $25 million over four years. Wade probably now will focus on pitching. He has made offers to, or has an interest in Scott Linebrink, Jeremy Affeldt, Troy Percival, Randy Wolf and Jon Lieber.

Good part is that they don't have to give up any draft picks to sign Matsui unlike if they signed Iguchi.

Depending on the terms of the contract. Kaz won't be a bad signing. He doesn't light it up, but should hit around .275 and give station to station play that Wade is trying to create. It also gives some great up the middle defense if they are committed to keeping Everett.

Iguchi was released (apparently there is a stipulation in his contract that he can't be offered arbitration, or something) and would not have cost the Stros compensation.

"Station to station" is the exact opposite of what they're trying to create.

Maybe i'm getting my terminology mixed up. But I thought that referred to getting runners on actually moving them forward through steals, singles, sacrifices, etc.. Not hoping for the longball to bail you out.

"Station to station" is typified by a bunch of bad/slow baserunners who only take 1 base on a single, can't score from 1st on a double, etc....

Pretty much like the Stros last season.

Nah, you're spot-on on what SmithWade are trying to do. Speed at the top of the lineup, defense up the middle.
