Agreed with everything but the last sentence. Question, is Brown following the Luhnow model of drafting/signing in FA, trading for players analytics model?
Dylan Coleman was pretty good before he pitched hurt. Dylan Coleman in his career went from throwing 101 MPH in the minors, to pitching while hurt and topping out at 88 mph and almost being cut in the minors.... to making changes, dominating in the minors again and being very good in the big leagues.... where he decided to pitch again while hurt and had a terrible 2023. Let's see what happens..... last time something like this happened the Astros thought they lost Framber for a whole season and Crane told his GM to spend money to get a replacement (after telling his GM that it wasn't in the budget).
All you're really doing differently than going into last yrs rotation at the beginning of the seaon is trading out JV for Urquidy and you would be adding a much needed 7th inning guy. Of course I think Arrghetti/Gordon/Bielak etc... could fill in Urquidy's innings.
Fangraphs has the following teams who actually care and want to compete who have #5 or #6 SP projected to have less than 1 fWAR. They project Urquidy for 0.7 fWAR in 72 IP making him a 1.5 WAR SP in 150 IP They project France for 0.6 fWAR in 84 IP making him a 1 1 WAR SP in 150 IP. Royals #5 =0.9 D-Backs #5 = 0.6 Orioles #5 = 0.8 Blue Jays #5 =0.9 Padres #5 =0.8 Red Sox #6 = 0.3 Cards #6 = 0.4 Twins #6 = 0.4 All of them could use a guy like Urquidy or France. I need to look and see if any of them can be a good match for a reliever in trade.
Some of this was true, but I would say you need to take a look at who Neris was before coming to the Astros. Neris had his two best seasons in his career as a relief pitcher in Houston with the exception of the 2017 season.
I think they should bring Maton or Stanek back at this point . Both have shown flashes of brilliance and have familiarity with the Astros. They are also due for a bounce back and we know that relievers are fickle specimens
3 BP trade targets that shouldn’t cost much: Hunter Harvey (Nats) Peter Lambert (Rockies) Garret Crochet (White Sox) I would think Lambert or Crochet could be had for a couple of extra upside/lotto AAA arms like Jairo Solis and Misael Tamarez. Harvey would probably be a little more expensive but still shouldn’t cost anything too significant.
The White Sox are planning on moving Crochet into their rotation, which has been in the works for several years.
I was referring to a post comparing Crane being cheap to Jones...Jones is a fool, but he isn't cheap, he is lavish
He said the bullpen was already an area of concern before the injury. There are limitations to what he can do unless it is something Crane wants to do. I would really like someone like Moore or even Chapman to lean on - but the GM and pitching coach honest prefer the internal options more than most the pitchers on the market. I can understand the frustration though.
Ever since I have been looking into the minor league and under the radar pitching moves Brown has made the past 4 1/2 months I have been more and more excited about them. It's nice to know the organization feels that way too.
Graveman isn't good and was a lottery ticket for a rebound. Considering most lottery tickets aren't winners, I see the Graveman injury impacting the bullpen just slightly more than it impacts 3B.
