From what I can tell he was above average in 2022... https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/lead...&team=&range=year&min=q&pos=8&roles=&viz=hide
Ok, sure. But "what should I do to give us the best chance to win" is something this owner and previous GM's have done a number of times.
That's is not completely true. "What should I do to give us the best chance to win without hurting our chances to win next year and the coming years." Is what this team has done. In fact, staying competitive "always having the window open" has been this owner and GMS (plural) philosophy from day 1. Trading away young controllable players for a star rental (not a guy like Mancini) is actually completely against their philosophy. Every major player they have traded for had multiple years of control remaining, otherwise they only traded away lottery tickets or supporting players.
One could say the prospects we gave up to get JV back hurt our future. Signings like Montero hurt our future. And on and on. So what your saying isnt completely true either.
Yes, but JV was signed for 2-3 seasons. What I said was this team has not traded away future building Block type players on rentals and that stands here. The team also traded 5 years of Musgrove and others for 2 years of Cole. Crane and GMs have always been willing to give up talent, as Ling as they got multiple years (and not a rental) in return. As for Montero, that's completely unrelated. They gave away no talent, and fully expected he was worth the money and would make the team better. That's simply making a mistake. Not intentionally hurting your future for today. I stand by my statement. Find me a player the Astros traded away for a rental that ended up becoming an All star? Siri for Mancini is probably the closest.
The statement your holding to isnt wrong. But I dont think I am wrong either in pointing out in the past, we have made a number of big moves to get better. The difference between the past and now is that we no longer have the farm assets to give up for a big move, we dont have space to spend, we dont want to pay extra tax or sacrifice picks, so we are trapped in a corner. In the past, we were not.
We're still the team to beat. Had it in the bag this year... then it went away like Dusty in the Wind
I still can't comprehend why they just didn't come to a compromise with him leaving with a ring in 2022. Would have been the perfect ending. Instead, he cost us a WS with his inflated ego and "retired" a bitter old man. Pretty sad to see.
His post made no sense whatsoever. Perez is out of the league, Daz will be soon so the only guy even worth mentioning is Jake Rogers.
Perez may be one of the stranger stories out there. He makes it to AA for the Astros as a 20 year old and top 50 prospect in the MLB. He gets traded and assigned to Detroit’s AA team. Never pitches there — and in fact never pitches a game in AA (or AAA) ever again.
Perez got hurt a bunch. He did pitch in the minors for the Tigers in low ball as I'm sure that you are aware of. He just was never the same. I think it wasn't until this year that they finally cut him. He's kind of like Whitley
