That makes sense. Or they want more 5 man than 6 man rotation and feel Diaz is better in bullpen than Garcia or Urquidy. It would be huge in playoffs. Imagine: Pressly, Diaz, Abreu, Montero, Neris After Framber, Javier, McCullers, Brown starting. Once again Stanek would not be able to get into a game.
It's not a vacuum. That cash could be spent elsewhere meaning if someone gets hurt you can go get another Greinke instead of a guy like Rich Hill...
Ok even if we give him the benefit of the doubt he still likes to beat women up for pleasure how do you think that would fit in with the clubhouse or with the Astros being covered by the media? It's not worth it, no matter how you look at it.
What the heck did Dusty do to you? Why would you be pissed of because people are noting that what Dusty did paid off and we won the WS, Dusty has a winning playoff record and has led numerous teams to the WS but for some reason that's a failure? I guess you think most managers are failures right?
It’s still one more arm than you need, but it’s not like it’s a guarantee that they would all be healthy, and if what’s going out the otherway is non star level OF ceiling and Garcia or Urquidy then fine, I guess. 8 good to great arms. 8 good to great bats. We have the arms. I’d say we have 9 or 10 meaning you have 2 redundancies built in, but you are short 1 or 2 bats I think- depending upon your position on Brantley’s health and Chas and Peñas development. More risk on the bat side which is why I’d rather see a trade made for offense, but if You are trading for a reliever I like that deal the more I think about it.
On paper the gap between the Astros and the Mariners and Rangers really is not that great. You would think there would be a greater sense of urgency by the FO in improving the team, even if there aren’t many bargains to be had in this market.
They could have signed Conforto although Brantley is not a bad backup plan. I think failing to sign Narvaez or some other LHB catcher was a missed opportunity for improving the team this season.
Dude what are you talking about? He used Abreu for long relief all the time and Maton usually went several innings as well and so did Javier. He would use anybody but Presley multiple innings.
Says who? The FO has improved the team, the same team that finished 16 games up on everybody else. What did those teams do to close the gap even if we did not sign Abreu?
The gap between the Astros and the Mariners/Rangers is about as big as the gap between the Mets and Astros according to Fangraphs’ Depth Charts. Edit: on the note of preseason projections, does anyone know if previous seasons’ preseason projections are available through Fangraphs?
I would offer Urquidy and Leon for Alexis Diaz, but would be reluctant to part with Garcia for a reliever. I did not know Alexis was Edwin's brother. Gave up 28 hits in 63 innings as a rookie with a 1.84 ERA!
