So your paying Contreras 80 mil or Benentendi 50-60 mil too come off the bench. Not even the Yankees or Dodgers spend like that.

you might with the 3 year window the Astros have to win 1-3 WS. Doubt they get both but one or the other would def be possible

    Re-sign: Verlander, 3 years, $38M AAV with a 4th year option ($12M buyout)

    Astros get: OF/C Daulton Varsho
DBacks get: RHP Jose Urquidy, RHP Misael Tamarez, 3B Joe Perez, RHP Phil Maton

Is this enough? Three pitchers who Strom is familiar with. I think Strom will help us match better with ARZ as a trade partner. We also shed some $$$ with Urquidy and Maton, and I think the former will benefit from reuniting with Strom and maybe the dimensions of Chase Field. Varsho can alternate between the OF and C. I think he'd make a good personal catcher for Javier, plus catching 20 more games.

I really do hope Crane goes all out into the tax. I want the Stros to spend the next 3 years turning this dynasty into a mega dynasty.

    No, and it's not close.

A Varsho package almost has to start with Hunter Brown, and one of our other top 5 at least. Urquidy has secondary trade value, not top 100 value.

Although it would only be for a part of the season, wRc+ 132 v. 70 would be massive. And i think Contreras for the 3 years following would be important.

I don't like the fit with Benintendi pretty much a LF only option. It only works if you relegate Yordan to DH which he is fighting. The OF position we need most is CF and Nimmo works there much better as the OMG hitting addition with the advantage that he's not a detriment in the field.

    1B Abreu New replaces Gurriel
    C Contreras New replaces Castro/Vasquez at C2
CF Nimmo New replaces Meyers McCormick
DH is primarily used for Contreras when he's not C1 and to keep other hitters on the field.

I really don't think we can do this and keep JV as much as I want to.

No. I'd classify this as one of the spare parts for valuable piece trade proposals. When you're talking about getting a solid above average piece with control, particularly one who plays TWO premium defensive positions, you gotta trade either really high upside or a similar young, above-average player.

Urquidy is a solid starting pitcher but he's not gonna return an above average player with control. Tamarez and Perez aren't even top 10 Astros prospects... and the Astros don't have a strong farm. Maton is a fine middle reliever but also won't move the needle on getting a big player back.

    2B Altuve 140
    SS Pena 150
    DH Alvarez 75/75 DH/LF
    3B Bregman 150
    RF Tucker 150
    1B Abreu 140
    C Contreras 60/70 C/DH
    LF Benentendi 85/15/10 LF/DH/CF
    CF McCormick 140
    BN Hensley 60
    BN Maldanado 70
    BN Dubon 30
    BN Lee 30

If we sign Contreras and Benentendi, the Astros have to be thinking about reducing Maldy’s playing time.

If they arent planning on playing Maldy more than 60-80 games, Benentendi makes sense.

    70 games Maldy
    60 games Contreras
    30 games Lee

Nobody plays their third string catcher 30 starts unless there is an injury.

So yeah that's not a thing.

    More likely

    Maldy 100+
    Contreras 50+

After the nixing of the Contreras trade last year by Dusty, he's all in for riding Maldonado another year. Only age could lower the number to what he did in 2021-2022 (113-125 games started).

Unique dynamics. Trying to get K Lee playing time.

Just not happening. That's like a utopian view that is just not in the cards.

I get it. And I actually would like to see it happen because we need to find out what we have in Lee.

So you dispute multiple reports that the Astros are strongly pursuing Contreras? Or you really think they are going to give him 80 games in LF?

If Contreras is signed there will be MANY games where Maldanado and Contreras are starting in the same lineup. That means we will have to carry Lee or Diaz. If it’s Lee, he’s definitely going to get playing time.

If J.V. doesn't resign with us I'm really pulling for him to go to the Mets. I just hate the Dodgers.

Honestly, if JV leaves. I want to play in a world series. He is shaky. Bring it on.

That's true if 15 of those are in the playoffs...
