Just moving to Minnesota leaves Correa with no cover. Pitchers will simply pitch around him dramatically lowering his wins above replacement. If he regresses to his career average in plate appearances he will likely produce 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 WAR. The Astros can surround Pena with good bats giving him a lot more pitches to hit. He should produce between 3 and 4 WAR with upside ahead of him for the next several years.

    Ok. Whats done is done.

I am in the minority in that I think Story would be an all star level shortstop but I would rather the team spend elsewhere

I think Jerrmy Pena should be penciled in as starting shortstop for the next few years and hope for the best.

The team was going to spend a lot of money on Carlos and that money can improve the team by extending the young stars.

If the goal is Trade Deadline flexibility, you may not see it. With questions at both SS and CF plus inevitable injuries or poor performance, you might need to make a couple of moves then. The season NEVER finishes the way it begins.

I'm worried, with expanded playoffs more teams will be buyers instead of sellers.
Fewer sellers, more buyers = higher amounts placed on assets.
    Supply and demand.
Get your pieces now and pray for production and health.

We need to answer a few questions first. It's only one extra team in the playoffs and there's no more third division team making the playoffs. It's strictly Division Winner and Runner up.

    2021 finish under new rules

    AL

    East

    1 TBR W
4 BOS or NYY (Tie Breaker) R

    Central

    3 CHW W
    6 CLE R

    West

    2 HOU W
    5 SEA R

    Round 1
    1 Bye
    2 Bye
    3 6
    4 5

    Round 2 LDS

    1 (4 or 5)
    2 (3 or 6)

    Round 3 LCS

    1 (4 or 5) 2 (3 or 6)

No... no it's not strictly the division winner and runner up. It's the 3 division winners in each league and the next 3 teams with the best records.

Essentially, the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays and Jays can all make the playoffs.

    Work on that spreadsheet

Story goes to the Red Sox, so the Astros are officially rolling with Jeremy Pena. I'm honestly surprised. The team that went to the WS last year and is 30+ million under the new luxury tax line spent $0 to replace the best shortstop in baseball? If it's because they believe in Pena so much because he really is that dude, that would be awesome.

I'm glad Story went to Boston and not the Yankees.

They don't have a surplus of top prospects to trade to actually upgrade CF or the pitching. The free agent market is dried up. Probably stuck with what we have until Meyers gets back and then the deadline.

    Correct

I am saying if their plan all along was to let Correa go and play Peña, They should have spent some of that money before all those other players were off the board

Conforto and Pham are now the only good free agents left. Wouldn’t mind Houston signing Conforto for the right price and having him or Tucker play CF this year with Conforto switching to LF to take over for Brantley next year.

6 years, 140 for Story. I mean, why not take a flyer at that rate? Less than $25 mill a year.

Welcome to being an Astros fan, where our team does the bare minimum to contend.

They won't, lol. I'll eat crow if they make any noteworthy moves before Spring Training is over.

Because Coors field home/road splits. His road splits are worth half that at best.

I suppose. Click hasn't made any big splashes that haven't involved essentially resigning players. It's something, yes. But not much.

I would be more confident in Crane’s cheapness if Luhnow were still here. Hopefully the scouting department is charged and ready to go. It’s not easy to replicate the Cardinals style, I’m curious to see how the team progresses.
