Stroman would be a great trade candidate with high upside. Would love to see what Strom can do with him. And you can't spell Stroman without Strom, just sayin'. I'd like to see if we can also bundle Justin Smoak in a trade with Stroman. Jays seriously considered declining his option, per Heyman (he's blocking Rowdy Tellez, who the Jays seem to be high on). Solid switch-hitter, great d at 1B (can move Yuli into a utility role), maybe the Crawford Boxes can help his power on the right side. Last year in his contract, may want to come to a contender. Some talk about him possibly being move but not too much.
Stroman was on the DL last year for shoulder fatigue..... Ehhh, not sure I want to give up top 10 prospects with that risk
Love hearing that Luhnow is thinking of Gurriel taking over Marwins role combined with rumored interest in Nelson Cruz, as it indicates they’ll add a bat in addition to a catcher (although that may make it more likely they go with a weak hitting catcher). Another elite bat will really stretch the lineup allowing guys like Gurriel, Tucker, White, Kemp, and Reddick to hit in the bottom of the order. Based on Luhnow’s comments today, I expect a catcher (not Realmuto), a bat, an elite SP (likely via trade), and another pitcher (either a 3rd tier starter or a 2nd tier reliever). I’m totally cool with 3 elite guys (Verlander, Cole, plus whoever they trade for) plus McHugh and James as the opening day rotation, especially considering the depth in the upper levels of the farm (Whitley, Thornton, Armenteros, Rodgers, Cionel Perez, Corbin Martin, Bukauskas, Framber Valdez) and the depth of the big league bullpen (Peacock, Devenski, Harris, Smith, Rondon, Pressly, Osuna, plus 1 added reliever).
You could very well see Nelson Cruz on a 2yr deal A trade for S. PEREZ. Or J.T. Realmuto Then it's just a pitching conundrum. Could they go get Grienke, Carrasco, Paxton, Gray(Rockies), Gray (Yankees) or Stroman? What would FA look like? DO You need a OF? Could you trade for Dee Gordan? maybe a Bench bat??? Daniel Murphy? What about a couple Relivers?? Zach Britton? Garret Richard's? Andrew Miller? Kevin Herrara? There will be alot to do this offseason.
I honestly think Peacock and McHugh will be almost as good or better than most of the available second tier arms. Unless we are looking for another front end guy, I'm fine rolling with them and just adding a depth arm if Morton is hurt or signs elsewhere.
https://www.bostonsportsjournal.com...e-bidders-eovaldi-kimbrel-looking-big-payday/ With McCullers out, Eovaldi is a natural target....there will be a bidding war as many teams will be seeking his services.
Yeah, by 2nd tier I mean basically not Kimbrel. Britton and Miller to me are 2nd tier as they should both get less than $15M/yr and sign for less than $40M total.
First, it's Dee GordOn. 2nd, why? What does he bring that we don't already have? There's no shortage of OF defense. He doesn't hit for any power and doesn't even hit for average anymore. We have slap hitting speedy defensive OF'ers already that are MUCH cheaper than Gordon.
Didn't the Astros dispatch Kluber and the Indians rather easily just a few weeks ago while the Red Sox were easily dispatching the Yankees? Teams are chasing the Astros and Red Sox. It is not the other way around.
Why do you say defensive? He's basically a slightly better Fisher out there. Poor routes, but his speed allows him to be maybe an average defensive player in the OF. Maybe he gets better with more time, but I expect he'll be going back to the dirt.
I assume we'll likely see both - they'll add an arm and likely fill the 3/4 and/or 5 spots with some combination of McHugh, Peacock, Whitley, James, etc.
I wasn't saying Gordon is a good defensive OF. I meant we already have better and I can't figure out why that poster wants him so bad. It's at least the 2nd time he's advocating trading for Gordon.
You ask why? Think if Carlos goes down or Altuve Gordon can cover. Gordon in Cf Springer to RF Reddick to LF Gordon is better then Jake and any player behind Springer and Reddick
Marisnick had a higher OPS last year; so did Tony Kemp. And I'd rather Kyle Tucker get those ABs. (As would the Astros, I promise.) Gordon has posted a sub. 300 OB% 2 of the past 3 years and he's a horrible baserunner. And he could be on the books for as much as $41MM through '21. The Astros won't have any interest in him. Zero.
