I wonder if our FO feels like Charlie is gonna struggle with health issues moving forward and that is why we moved on? That’s the only thing that really makes sense to me
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rodgers or Armenteros slotted into a spot start. It’s a long season.
The Astros would deal Reddick right now if someone would take on his contract. Astros have tried to get creative recently, discussing deals involving Reddick with teams like San Francisco (Belt) but nothing has come to fruition.
....While at the same time trying to upgrade the DH. I just don’t think they are ready to give Tucker the job outright.
Interesting - Belt's got 3 years, $51 million left. The Giants are a mess, so at least a deal like that would clear long term salary. He's probably more valuable than Reddick straight up, but it's an extra year + ~$25 million in commitment... probably about even trade value-wise. It's hard to see him as a surefire upgrade on offense to Yuli, though.
It has been very slow on the free agent signings? thought we would here some name being signed after new years
My guess is that the stove will begin to heat up late January. I think a lot of teams are hesitating to give out major contracts to Machado, Harper, Grandal and Keuchel. It will be interesting to see if teams actually pay the high prices being sought, or whether the market will force these players to accept fewer years.
I am sure everyone remembers last year where many FA's held out and some of them had trouble finding jobs. Time has yet to tell whether this crop of holdouts, or some portion of, are still around in March. Does yesteryear repeat itself or does it unfold differently? I guess it depends on what factored in to last years outcome. If one thinks that the increasing number of teams not trying to compete drove that outcome, then a repeat is certainly possible.
Shockingly, Nelson Cruz signed with Minnesota because...money. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/01/al-central-notes-indians-cruz-tigers.html “Meanwhile, Rosenthal adds that Cruz did receive two-year offers in free agency, but none that would’ve come close to the $26MM he can earn if the Twins exercise his 2020 option.”
Which they won't because the regression will be real and on full display. I doubt he hits more than 24 home runs
Rumors today that Jose Martinez, Kluber and Bauer are unlikely to be dealt. Add Syndergaard to that list and Bumgarner from reports earlier in the winter. And as plentifully reported, Realmuto’s cost practically makes him untradeable. It seems that many of our most hopeful targets are off limits.
Feels like strange reasoning. If he's good enough to get the option picked up, he would have been good enough make money in free agency again, the buyout is negligible. Unless people were outright refusing a one year deal, which seems unlikely. As most of us figured, we were only interested in Cruz on very team friendly terms. Particularly when we signed Brantley.
The Astros are always only interested in a player if they can get him at good terms. The only time that I know of where the Astros ownership stepped in and pressured a move was for Giles. The Astros will make more moves (like you know) before the deadline.

Ohhhh... that's interesting. I didn't know that. As usual, we appreciate your posts @Nook. Amazing insight that we can only get here.
This. Club option is hugely club friendly. A 1 year deal for 14 million would be better for Cruz as he's taking all the risk with this deal. Either he's great and he gets hosed by club taking option. Or he's not great and gets hosed by getting cut. Very small margin that Cruz is worth 12 million in 2nd year and it doesn't matter if he's cut or not.
