Not as exciting as having Bagwell back in uniform, but at least the guy seems to know what he's doing.
Is it normal for him to only get a one-year contract? I don't know anything about this guy but if the Astros have the same lineup as last year, not much could be expected from this offense. Castro and Wallace might get better with experience but I doubt CJ can have the type of season he had last year as well.
Maybe Wade's got his eye on someone else, all the other coaches got 2 year extensions at the end of last year. Or maybe they just want him to prove himself with this squad next year. It's a got to be a positive that he knows Johnson, Castro, and Manzella, right? I mean they all hit ok in the minors, maybe he can be a familiar face that can help them get or stay on track.
Tommy Manzella got released from his team in the Winter League after hitting .182. I hope the Astros aren't going into the season with him penciled in at shortstop. http://blogs.chron.com/baseballblog/archives/2010/11/updates_from_as_1.html
I didn't even know you can get cut from a winter league team. I know he didn't have a lot of ABs there but he showed me nothing this past year to tell me he is a major league caliber player much less a starter. He is 27 years old so he is upside is very limited as well. I don't think Angel Sanchez is a starter either but he was much better than Tommy.
As far as Tommy Manzella goes, I heard he had bronchitis and stomach problems and was cut because of that. I wish he got cut from the astros. What a waste of a roster spot.
http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/spo...ll-berkman's-agent-they-will-not-pursue-lance Berkman will not be back. I think this is the right move. Give Wallace a chance and see what you have. Berkman is nothing more than a platoon/pinch hitter at this point.
Good to read, Puma was a great part of the Stros history but time to turn the page. I HOPE this means Wallace will get the majority of the playing time at 1st. As far as Puma, I think he will end up in Tampa or Arlington...both make sense.
Yeah I think he could up with Texas or Tampa too because of the former Astros connections. Carlos Pena won't be re-signed in Tampa so they have opening at 1st. Mitch Moreland had a great playoff run and end of regular season so I don't know if Texas would be interested in him. He said last week he wanted to play in NL but he might not have many options. I think Berkman is looking going to get a 1 year deal for like $3 million. They are many free agent 1st baseman this year like Adam Dunn, Aubrey Huff, Paul Konerko, Derrek Lee, Adam LaRoche, Nick Johnson, and Ty Wigginton.
The guy was not healthy, and the guy went home; he did not get "cut". Some of you people are really slow. Angel Sanchez slow. Sid Bream slow. Faster than Tough Tony Eusebio, but that's like being the tallest midget in an asskicking contest.
Are you a reporter? Because every article I have seen about it says Tommy Manzella was RELEASED after hitting poorly. He's an aspiring athlete, he's not going to go home because he's sick.
Odd, that's not what you posted yesterday: "As far as Tommy Manzella goes, I heard he had bronchitis and stomach problems and was cut because of that...."
I was posting a rumor I heard. Everything else posted here said because he was hitting poorly. Sorry for sharing that with the message board. I'll be careful next time I relay something that I hear so I don't get ripped for it.
You posted your rumor after there was one blog article posted concerning Manzella's lack of hitting. Are there other articles that weren't posted that you have read? I am truly curious.
Are you? Dude is on a MLB 40 man roster, hell, dude is on a 25 man active roster; he can not be "cut" or "released" by an AFL team absent from guidance from his affiliated club. This has not happened, he got sick and he went home, this is common in offseason leagues for various reasons.
First of all, he isn't playing in the AFL. Only to best prospects play in the AFL. Second, where did you get this crap that he is sick and went home? He was terrible and the team cut him and what is said in the Chronicle article.
My bad, Dominican, Arizonan, what's the difference right? Like he said, I'm not a reporter. FYI, in case it matters: http://twitter.com/LuichySanchez/status/29496796530
