I don't want anybody taking AB's away from Wallace at first. Neither do the Astros, which is why they didn't sign an outfielder to move Lee over there. Even if he sucks, it will be much more fun to see the rookie get his chance at 600 PA's rather than watch some retread journeyman waste a rebuilding year taking up a spot. If he sucks, you figure that out, move him out of your future plans and move on.
Uh Cantu signed with the padres a few days back............. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=6062688
Not really Astros offseason post but I didn't want to start a new thread. I heard Nolan Ryan on 610 this evening, he was asked a couple of questions that I thought were interesting. Ryan was asked if he wanted a larger Role while with the Astros while there. His answer was yes, but with Wade coming in there was uncertainty on what direction the team was going. Ryan spoke of the Rangers saying, if he knew he was going to have to spend all that time in court due to the team going through bankruptcy, and the uncertainty that came with the club, he would have never left the Astros. Rich Lord then asked Ryan if he would have attempted to buy the Astros, he was very candid and said yes. Ryan wanted to stay in state and still considers himself an Astro. I know this is all for naught, but it's very disappointing to know for sure that yes he would have tried to buy the club in the sense that I think Ryan would have been a fantastic owner. Why is it Ryan has gotten the shaft from this orginization not once but twice now. Sucks, I know it is what it is now but still...
I can't wait for the season to start, Rockets have me in AGONY and I've tuned out the Texans/NFL minus the Super Bowl.
Nolan Ryan still considers himself an Astro? Really? Why than did he choose to go into the HOF wearing a Rangers hat? He may still have a part of himself that he considers an Astro, but when it came down to it, Ryan, and ONLY Ryan, showed what he really considers himself, and that's a Texas Ranger.
It was part of his contact with the Rangers (after the Astros cut him loose) that obligated him to go in to the Hall as a Ranger. It happens. That's how you end up with Wade Boggs as a Devil Ray.
Either that, or the Rangers continually gave him better opportunities than the Astros did, despite his being more interested in staying as part of the Astros.
Any vitriol aimed at Nolan Ryan is freaking ridiculous. The Astros had every opportunity with him, and blew it in epic proportions.
That was the report. The Hall of Fame decided to stop giving the players the choice of hat because of Boggs. The Hall may ask a player as a courtesy.
Wow, I thought they made that change because of Boggs but after Boggs. I even went to the HoF's website because I didn't believe you. Good.
I don't think Wags has a real shot at the Hall. He seems to be one of those "really nice career, but not all-time great" kind of guys.
I agree. It doesn't help Wagner's case that the Hall has been somewhat unkind to closers overall. Sutter got in, but when he got in they spent more time talking about how he was an innovator more than a great pitcher. Eck is in too, but his induction was more about how he was both a starter and closer and had a ton of wins and saves. As far as current closers, I think only Mo Rivera is a lock.
@Ken_RosenthalSource: Carlos Lee for Young a longshot. Young can be sent to #Astros w/o restriction. Lee can veto deals to #Rangers, 13 other clubs. #MLB
I would do this deal in a heartbeat. This frees up Wallace to play 1B and then Young or Hall could go to the outfield.
oh, my crap...make that happen....as much as anything, just to unload frickin' lee on the rangers and take away the fan favorite.
