Agree, not that it was going to be a BAD contract but his value is sky high right now and could net a NICE return on the trade market...if they look this route and considering they want to save cash I'm not sure why they don't.
Couldn't agree more. He's a lefty that can win 15 games and isn't injury prone. We should be able to get a few young guys in exchange for him, which should be our single-minded focus. The italics were used becuase I'm still scratching my head on the Barmes trade? (By the way, is it pronounced Barms [rhymes with farms] or Bar-mess?)
I think Wandy would fetch a lot more in a trade if he had a 3-yr, $24MM contract than he will as a 1-year rental. That price would be an absolute steal for a pitcher of his quality.
Just saying... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/jon_heyman/12/01/tigers.scoop/1.html#ixzz16szP4ken
Maybe Drayton feels that by adding Lee it would garner a bit more interest from buyers, although the payroll would surely increase drastically.
+1 Hopefully they don't make the same mistake they did with Oswalt, hanging on to him for about two years too many.
Ed Wade is doing a pretty good job so far in arbitration. Astros are going to have alot more to use (if they wish) in free agency than I thought they would. Figueroa pitched really well last season as a long reliever/spot starter.
Okajima from Boston was non-tendered today. I don't know if they plan on bringing hom back but, the Stros need to get this dude IMO he could solidlify our bullpen.
Matt Diaz was also non-tendered today, this guy can flat out hit. I know they want a lefthanded outfielder but Diaz would be an excellent power guy coming off the bench when Lee plays 1st.
To the two posters above: I absolutely love the idea of adding Okajima and Diaz. Who's going to be that starting pitcher we need so badly though? Javy Vasquez is gone. Chris Young will probably be pitching in Citi Field next year. Brandon Webb? Mark Prior? Is there someone I'm missing that has actually pitched in the last 2 seasons?
He's a project but, ANDREW MILLER. Centerpiece of the Miggy/Dontrelle trade a few years ago. Dude could easily turn things around and be the number 1 that he was projected to be. He could also turn out to be a huge bust. Why not give him the #5 and roll out with a rotation of... Myers Wandy Happ Bud Miller 1-3 very solid with 4-5 being a little iffy. Since we non-tendered Sammy yesterday, i know he didnt pitch much last year, we need to sign Okajima ASAP
Love this idea! We absoutely need to be taking chances like this. Signing young guys with checkered pasts to short-term, incentive laden deals and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.
Winter meetings start today, I expect the Stros to find their bargin basement pitcher and outfielder this week. Off-Topic but nice to see someone else signing a Carlos Lee type deal and setting up their franchise for failure...seriously what are the Nats thinking?
Doesn't effect us but Carl Crawford must be giddy right now, he is the better player and should be getting an even bigger contract. Reminds me of the Winter we got Carlos, the Cubs screwed up the market by outbidding themselves on Soriano which brought the price up for Lee to 100 million when 80 should have been the benchmark.
By "80 should have been the benchmark," you really meant, "he should lose 80 lbs before he's signed"?
