Drayton wants the payroll at 80 mil and as it stands right now before arbitration (Wandy, Pence, Bourn, Barmes, etc.) its at 39.2 mil and should be around 60 after.

I'd like dealing Wandy for Reyes.

And then signing Carl Crawford to a backloaded deal (giving Carlos Lee a heavy dose of 1B).

    Bourn CF
    Reyes SS
    Pence RF
    Lee 1B
    Keppinger 2B
    Crawford LF
    Johnson 3B
    Castro C

Best lineup in the division..by far.

That would put it at around 77 mil or so and would be enough to add a quality innings eater in the rotation to replace Wandy for a 1yr 3 mil type deal.

    Crawford
    Lee
    Pence
    Keppinger
    Johnson

would be better imo, Crawford is too good to hit 6th. Maybe even hit him 4th just to have another lead off man. Would be awesome but it'll probably never happen

    Also dont forget Oswalts salary

With Drayton now putting the team up for sale, how do you guys think that it will affect the payroll going into this free agency?

Wallace should be the one playing first base unless we're halfway through the season and he's still sucking.

Signing Carl Crawford would be a bad idea, so much of his game is based on speed and he's not far from his thirties. He's going to require a huge contract and it will probably be just as bad as Lee's by the time it's done.

Meh I don't see any of those guys except Carl Crawford as being a big upgrade over our in-house options. And with Crawford he's just too expensive.

I like Ankiel...I agree Crawford is gonna be out of our budget...but I think Ankiel could be worth a shot at the right price. Problem is, anyone who comes in, comes in at the expense of developing Brett Wallace...and Im not so sure thats a good idea...unless we can flip him for a starter

Per that list, it's Ankiel as a patch or Crawford if they choose to break the bank. The rest on that list were crap. I'd rather give Bogusevic a shot than sign any of them, save Crawford. Even then, with what Crawford is going to command, I'd prefer to save $ and stay young.

Suprised Melky Cabrera didn't make his list, nice 4th outfielder who shouldn't cost to much to acquire.

I am glad the Astros got rid of Tim Byrdak today. He had a very nice 2009 year but this past year was bad. His ERA is always going to be low because he only faces one batter a game and somebody always bails him out. He is 37 years old and probably would have made around $2 million dollars if the Astros kept him. He also had sports hernia surgery. They could spend that money elsewhere.

Gustavo Chacin was awful and I don't know why it took the Astros so long to cuth him.

Regarding my Wandy for Reyes idea...

    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/...tml?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Mets are insane if they think they will get 3 or 4 players for a good but not great player, Stros should inquire and see what can be done.

I actually thought that Wandy for Reyes deal was a good idea. Both are on the last year of their deals. Both fulfill the other teams needs. Good left handed pitching is just as hard to get as getting a shortstop. Ed wade needs to pick up that phone and get this deal done.

I know some wanted us to take a look at Zach Duke(myself included) but traded to the Diamondbacks for a PTBNL

Would it be a pretty fair trade? Sure. But it would be a pretty purposeless trade--we'd just be creating a hole in the starting rotation in order to fill the hole at shortstop. Unless Drayton is about to hop on the crazy train and spend $25MM/year on Cliff Lee, that doesn't improve the team, it just makes the team different.

Plus, he's our Wandy. I like Wandy. He came up through our farm system, he's the last player from the World Series team, and he's a good pitcher. I wouldn't mind signing him to an extension. I don't care one way or another about Jose Reyes other than acknowledging that he is a decent, although injury-prone player.

It didn't say they wanted 3 or 4 good players. Didn't we trade something like 5 or 6 players for an aging Tejada? I'd say Reyes is better now than Tejada was then given his age and defensive ability.

On espn they are saying Chris Young and the Mets are talking.. He would be a good edition to our ptiching staff. He only 31 and He was injured for most of last year but in 4 games he did pitch is era was 0.90 which is awesome.

Just read the extension talks with Wandy is likely 3yrs and 25 mil similar to the contract of Joe Blanton.

Also the Rangers seem interested in Andy Pettitte.
