Caratini is under contract for 2025 @ $6M. Brown said back up catcher is a spot they feel they can trade from to save money. Translation, " We are In all kinds of money problems. We have no money and plenty of holes to fill. Diaz proved what we needed him to as a catcher. We are comfortable with him there 125+ games. Salazar is better than we expected. He is wasted in AAA. Caratini outperformed his contract, but also his career numbers and may not really be this good. We can use that $6M to fill another hole or two."
Who said 12 years? And your idea (not the Astros idea) of downgrading the catcher position is not a smart one.
Or he had a great year, his trade value will never be higher and we think the 6 mil can be spent better elsewhere.
So you agree Diaz isn't going to be a catcher his whole career or majority of it? I have no problem with a slight downgrade at catcher for huge upgrade at 1B if it means young and cheap with upside. Caratini is going to get paid in a year and sooner they prepare the better. I'm thinking the issue is I'm thinking long term and you're only concerned for next year. If Yainar is catcher for 20% of the game instead of 70% I don't think it's as bad as you make out if it's a decent hitting young catcher getting those 50% of starts.
So it’s 1 year or 12 years? It’s like arguing with a child. You know zero about how his career will unfold. You clearly don’t know what you are talking about. Downgrading the catcher position is a terrible idea. Where did you get the idea that Diaz is a “huge” upgrade at 1B?? You’re just a Dusty guy. That’s all this could possibly be. Dusty guys don’t want Diaz catching but it’s not for baseball reasons. I’ve given you ample time to explain yourself. You have offered nothing that would convince me that your idea isn’t pure silliness.
Smart ass time. Literally, the Astros have never had "more than a decade between playoff appearances." Their first appearance was in 1980. Nothing before that counts because there wasn't a beginning to the "between" 10 years between 1987-1996. 9 years between 2006-2014. 4 years between 1982-1985. No other gaps over 2 years. Never more than 10 years. 18 playoff appearances since 1980 = 40% 16 playoff appearances since 1986 = 41% 15 playoff appearances since 1997= 54% 9 playoff appearances since 2015= 90%
Smart ass time Last game in 1986 postseason to first game in 1997 postseason was more than a decade. Barely, but still more than a decade. From 2005 to 2015....days short of 2 such events.
From Game 6 in 1986 when I was in 6th grade to watching Ausmus hit a HR and Bagwell lift up Biggio while I was newly married and in law school felt like roughly 3,679 years. Roughly. also…12 year old me can’t believe I’m rooting for the Mets right now but 12 year old me would also very much understand that I can’t root for the Dodgers ever because my grandparents would disown me.
My take is Diaz is THE catcher for the next 2 years. If our no. 1 draft pick works out he will probably be moved to first base. Yanier is a natural hitter. Over time I think he will be 40+ hrs. He is a good catcher, but his bat is what makes him special. Everybody says 1B is easy to fill, but man have we been bad at it.
