That would be a very interesting scenario. Although if it was Arenado at $15M/year vs Santander at $20M/year, I think I'd prefer to have Santander's switch hitting slugging in the lineup for more balance. If we miss out on Breggy, then I suppose both could be an option too.
Any 2 of the following would be great: Bregman Arenado Goldschmidt Pederson Turner, Canha, France, Verdugo, Winker, and Solano would be ok consolation options. The team’s glaring weakness is a shallow, weak lineup against RHP. Their secondary weakness is a farm short on potential stars, which is why it doesn’t make sense to give up a 2nd round pick to sign one of the non-superstar QO free agents. They need 2 bats who crush righties and don’t cost a draft pick.
I don't think Pederson is a fit because he is a butcher in the OF and DH needs to be saved for Yordan/Altuve./Diaz Possibly available, 120 or better wRC+ in 2024, can play OF or 3b. I can't tell if you guys are joking are not. Altuve will never play in the outfield. He doesn't have the arm for even leftfield and he is slowing down as well. He will play 2nd base/DH for the rest of his career.
Agreed. He wouldn’t be the worst LF in Astros history but he has no business being converted to an everyday LF role. He will play 2B everyday for hopefully 2-3 more seasons, then have 1-2 seasons where he plays 2B with fly ball pitchers and DHs other days, then be a DH only for the rest of his career.
It's looking more and more like the Astros are going to need to jigsaw puzzle the bottom half of the lineup everyday in 2025. Since they have decided they aren't trading Framber, and it makes no sense to trade any other SP, they need to get serviceable bats who can play OF or a corner inf for Pressly and/or Caratini. Based on roster construction and rules, it's nearly impossible to platoon more than 2 positions. That means they need at least 2 more everyday players at 1b/3b and/or OF. Of they get that then they can look for platoon options to pair with some combination of Singleton, Chas, Meyers, Dubon, Dezenzo, or Whitcomb in the other 2 spots. Despite all the noise, I don't see them paying the penalty to sign a FA w/ a QO attached despite what they are saying. The options are getting pretty low. I still think resigning Bregman solves multiple issues and is by far the best choice, even if it will look ugly in 5-7 years.
When the Astros traded for Greinke there was 62.5 million in deferred money owed. The break down was the following: '22 12.5 mil '23 12.5 '24 12.5 '25 12.5 '26 12.5 So two more yrs on the books. Wondering if the Astros have looked at deferring some money in order to make the Bregman contract work? Example 30 mil over say six yrs (5 mil per yr) starting in 2032. Bregman would obviously have to be open to it as well.
Paredes would be in the outfield before Altuve. Oddly enough, Altuve has gotten some work in at first … if I were a SS or 3rd baseman, it would be intimidating seeing a midget target at 1st.
