Will be interesting to see if we keep Springer in RF. I think there is a decent chance, given his injury history. This will be a scary team if Marisnick can play up to a Kiermaier/Pillar role.
Napoli is a righty. Always has been. He's duplicative with Gattis..can't imagine both existing on this team really. It'd be a tough way to spend 2 roster spots
What I think it might mean is that the Astros are not blind to the possibility that Gattis' season was an aberration - which, if true, pleases me to no end as I thought their winter last year fell victim to small sample size delusion. The Astros have to be pragmatic in their approach to 2017. They have essentially three sure things, at least offensively: Altuve, Correa & Springer. Any other assumption beyond those three - Bregman being better; Gattis building on '16; Gurriel figuring it out - should be hedged to some degree - they need to build-in safety nets.
I think this will be 12 of the 13 position player roster spots C McCann, Gattis IF Gurriel, Altuve, Correa, Bregman, Gonzalez OF Springer, Marisnick, Reddick, Teo, Aoki Last spot could be Beltran or a first baseman or leave an open competition amongst Reed, White, Moran, Kemp, Them Tucker Boys, etc I feel like moves potentially major and minor are abundant especially amongst pitching.
Astros need a Ace in the worst way and there's not one in Free agency so they have to trade for one. The best way to not kill the farm system is by giving up one of Bregman, Correa, or Springer. Highly doubt they put Bregman or Correa in the market so Springer is the most likely.
Why would you kill the major league team to protect the farm??? Some people have things WAYYYYYYYYY backwards....
You have a core here so why would we even think about giving up all these years of work just to get rid of our major league team? You trade your pieces in the farm system to get those players to elevate the ML roster... at all costs.
It is entirely possible they will non-tender Aoki. http://www.chron.com/sports/astros/...h-Josh-Reddick-makes-Nori-Aoki-a-10623313.php
Because they are going to have to pay players soon. Altuve, Springer, Dallas and Giles are all going to paid soon and not long after that Correa followed by Bregman. Plus the addition of Reddick make Springer expendable. If your can keep the core and Add a ace with the farm system fine but I'm just remembering the uncle drayton days when the farm system was just destroyed. 5 years of shityness.
Short of getting a Kluber, Kershaw, Arrieta or Bumgarner type pitchers I say hell no to trading Bregman or Correa. But if Springer gets you Verlander or Sale I say hell yeah
Yeah; several *years* from now. Josh Reddick does not make George Springer expendable; they are not peers. Springer is significantly better. You can gut the farm as long as you replenish it - *that* was Drayton's downfall; he gutted his international scouting and stopped investing in the draft. This regime is committed to prioritizing the draft. Any short-term damage they inflict (to make the big league club better) can easily be remedied with the next several drafts. There shouldn't be a prospect in this (farm) system nailed down if they can land an ace on a multi-year deal.
The White Sox don't "want" to move Sale...so they wouldn't even remotely consider that deal. It's a lot of talent without a doubt, but if they end up taking something like that for him, it would be a deadline deal if they are out of it...for them to move him in the offseason would have to include someone of the Springer/Bregman/McCullers group, along with all of those prospects
If we're trying to go into Opening Day with someone like Sale or Archer on our team, it's going to be at the expense of an everyday starter. There is literally no reason for the Sox (or any other team) to move their ace pitcher in the off-season when they have him locked up for several more years under team control. I think some of you are going to have serious sticker shock if a move for one of the bona fide aces out there is made.
Nevermind really thought the likes of Springer, Dallas and Altuve contracts end or be out of team control within a year or two and yeah cheap ass Drayton was a large reason why the farm system was garbage. But still say this if it takes Springer to get a Ace I say goodbye. Felt that way last year and feel that way this year
Yes ACEs don't come cheap and B level prospects won't get it done. Your going to need a A+ prospects and something more
I think the Astros have done more then enough for the lineup now is time to get a bullpen arm. Still pulling for Mark melancon if he is out there
I agree they've done "enough" with the lineup...Carlos Beltran makes some sense but doesn't move the needle much. I vote for Brett Cecil as the bullpen arm (since I don't think they'll be swimming at the top of the market). I'm crossing my fingers that all of the prospects they have can be traded for a single huge upgrade at SP or 1B/CF.
