1 more inning?? ... he had 89 pitches .. Roy consistently goes way more than that. If we were down a run, I can see it, but no way was that the smart play regardless of what happens. I'd still be saying the same thing if Lamb had jacked one out so I'm not basing anything on Wheeler giving up the triple. You know if we had a bullpen that had performed even decently this year, then I could at least understand. But if you have to take how they have done this year into account.
Darryle Ward has all the talent and lineage in the world to become a dominant hitter in baseball.... too bad he has the worst work ethic in history, and he only gets up for games that mean something to him (like beating his former team).
I'm not one of the people that thinks we should trade Lidge. However, I am firmly in favor of someone slapping some ******* sense into him.
I said before... it was a call that I would have been fine with either way. BUT... your point above is some severely flawed logic, cause if a manager has zero faith in a bullpen that's EXPECTED to perform better, you might as well get rid of all of them.
Lidge is getting smacked around alot right now, but Wheeler giving up a leadoff triple this inning is unacceptable also.
Its not about not having faith in your pen ... its about going with the option that give you the BEST chance to win (So taking into account who is in your pen and how they have been pitching HAS to be a factor). I guess I just have a different philosophy about it.
How about switching Qualls and Wheeler. Qualls has been the best reliever this year. The Astros outfield is the worst in the league. Willy Taveras and Preston Wilson are jokes and have a OPS's lower than .700 which is horrible. Taveras defense sucks. Jason Lane also sucks but he has been the best outfielder out of the 3 which says a lot about the other two. Play Burke at center, Berkman in Left, and Luke Scott in right. Also promote Hunter Pence to AAA so he could help after the break.
I don't know if all your wishes will come true, but Chris Burke (once his shoulder is fully healthy) is going to have to get a decent shot at being an everyday player. Even if they have to have a rotation (where Willy, Preston, and Lane each take a night of the week off, so that Burke can play), this team has to start getting consistent production from a source other than Berkman and Ensberg.
GOD DAMN THE BULLPEN! Seriously, we are losing to one of the worst teams in the league. hell, they have the SECOND worst record in the league at home. Ok....thankgod for LOST.
where to though? about the only thing you can do is bench the dumbass for the season. no team in their right mind wants him and the only other option would be calling up someone from the minors.
