Regrettably, there is a segment of the population who have difficulty (or no interest) in understanding the actual contours of the first amendment because they feel the world today somehow oppresses or “cancels” that segment’s ability to speak their thoughts without being criticized.
Gotta suspend him for hurting Julio’s feefees. Julio one of Dusty’s “big boys”? I think not! SEATTLE — Major League Baseball is looking into Wednesday night’s benches-clearing incident between the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners, during which Houston reliever Hector Neris is alleged to have shouted a homophobic slur in Spanish toward Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez, a league source said on Thursday. Neris apologized for his actions in a statement on Thursday afternoon, but called allegations that he used an anti-gay slur “simply incorrect.” “That did not happen and any suggestion to the contrary is wrong,” Neris said. “My mother raised me to love and respect people for who they are and that is how I live my life.” Rodríguez declined comment on Thursday when asked whether he heard Neris use a homophobic slur. “I’m going to keep the comments (private),” Rodríguez said. “But I feel like you’ve always got to give respect. He’s someone I had a lot of respect for. I’ve known him for a long time, dating back to 2020, during the pandemic. I just feel like I deserved a little more respect.” Neris charged Rodríguez after the pitcher struck the star outfielder out to strand the tying run on first base during the sixth inning of Houston’s 8-3 win. Benches and bullpens cleared, but no punches were thrown. Neris required two separate escorts off the field. Seattle third baseman Eugenio Suárez, who was on deck during Rodríguez’s strikeout, told multiple outlets on Wednesday night that Neris shouted a slur. Suárez declined further comment on Thursday before the Mariners’ series opener against the Rangers at T-Mobile Park. Asked on Wednesday night what he told Rodríguez, Neris replied in part: “it’s like if he hit me ‘I got you.’ Today I say ‘I got you.’” Rodríguez said he was “honestly so confused” at Neris’ actions. Neris described them as part of a “friendly competition” the two have, but apologized to Rodríguez, his family and the Mariners organization for how it came across. “My intent in going towards Julio was to get his attention as part of the friendly ongoing banter that we have had over the years,” Neris’ statement said. “I recognize that last night I should not have gone towards him like I did. I did not mean to disrespect him, his family or the Mariners. I do understand how my actions could be interpreted that way.” Neris and Rodríguez were, by all accounts, quite friendly before Wednesday’s brouhaha. Both are represented by the same agent, worked out together in past offseasons and played for Team Dominican Republic during the World Baseball Classic in March. Rodríguez is generally well-liked throughout Houston’s clubhouse, too. “I just felt (Neris) went a little bit overboard. I get the part where you can celebrate, you can be excited. But to come down and get in my face like that, that’s something I’m not going to take, not just from him, somebody I thought was my friend. Not just from him, but from anybody,” Rodríguez said. “That’s something I’m just not going to take. I didn’t appreciate the way he handled it.” Rodríguez said Neris has reached out in an attempt to apologize, but Rodríguez said he is “not going to” communicate with Neris and “I’m going to leave it at what happened, leave it at that.” “Even though we’ve got friends, sometimes once we step on the field, we’ve kind of got to forget about that. It’s kind of hard to learn it in that way. But sooner than later, I was going to learn something like that. I’m glad it happened now. I can kind of move forward,” Rodríguez said. Wednesday’s benches-clearing incident was the third between the Mariners and Astros this season and at least the fifth since 2022. Before Wednesday’s game, Houston manager Dusty Baker acknowledged the “bad blood” that has long brewed between both organizations, which has spanned his entire tenure. Mariners pitchers hit Chas McCormick, Yainer Diaz and Jose Altuve during this week’s series, furthering Baker’s anger. Last June, Neris was ejected from a game against the Mariners at Minute Maid Park in which he threw at Suárez and plunked Ty France. He received a four-game suspension for “intentionally throwing at Eugenio Suárez of the Mariners in the area of the head while warnings were in place,” according to the league. Neris had his suspension reduced to three games on appeal. Rodríguez homered off Neris during that game and celebrated demonstratively while circling the bases, but according to Rodríguez, that had no bearing on Wednesday’s benches-clearing incident. “I was celebrating with myself and my team. I never once looked at him. I never once tried to let him know, ‘I hit a home run against you.’ I was more celebrating the situation,” Rodríguez said. “That’s what I would have liked to have seen from someone I thought was my friend.” It’s unclear whether the league is considering suspending Neris, but losing him for any amount of time would stagger a surging Astros bullpen amid their playoff push. Neris has a 1.78 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 69 appearances and hasn’t been scored upon in 14 of his previous 15 outings.
There's no relevance and that particular poster isn't worth getting dragged down into an argument about it with.
They put shoes on their heads. Most likely not long after having gone to the restroom. Being soft is the least of their problems.
I guess one could say that Neris was celebrating the situation too. lol Anyway, lots of hurt about one grown man saying words to another one during sportsball.
