I'm sure there is more there than just this post, but I like to mention that Morton has been one of the greatest pitchers through the first five innings in the majors for a while. Yes, he has a lot of quality starts because he's CFM for first 5 innings. He doesn't become bad after the 5th (I'd say average), but he's only out there in the 6th inning and later to soak up innings with a lead. So, yes, Morton can pitch more than 5 innings. Just expect him to go from simply amazing early to average in the 5th or 6th inning when he starts to lose command.
You've just described the vast majority of major league pitchers, with respect to losing command as the game goes on.
No. Only about 10-15 pitchers can match Morton through 5. Not sure how 10-15 is close to majority. Of those 10-15, they typically go from simply amazing to great or good and finish high in Cy Young voting.
Actually, he's described every single pitcher ever, I can't think of a single one who ever got BETTER as the game progressed.
I've yet to see Verlander get lit up in any inning 1-5 then pick up up from 6+. When Verlander goes deep into games, he ALREADY has pitched well for the early innings, so his performance is simply staying where it already was, not improving. To be brief: Verlander doesn't start out like **** then get better, he's dominant from the first pitch.
You can go find instances of pitchers throwing better late in the game than early, but overall, pitchers don't improve as the game goes on. For example, first time through the lineup, JV gives up a .582 OPS, second time .562 and third time .767.
Yes. The majority of pitchers lose command as game goes on. The majority of pitchers do not lose command to magnitude of Morton. Not sure how many pitchers have their ERAs nearly triple after 5 versus the first 5.
Hard not to triple based on how good Morton has been early. My original comment was a jab at a couple of posters who claim Morton is only good for five innings. Clearly Morton gets the job done for longer than that.
In 2017 June 6, blew a 7-1 lead against the Royals and lost 9-7 August 26, blew 6-1 lead against the Angels and lost 7-6
