nice game by oswalt and the astros. hopefully they can continue the success tomorrow. thanks for helping my giants out.
I'm somewhat skeptical about how well he can perform at this point. How old is he now? 42? Chad Paronto has been tearing it up at AAA and has some good MLB experience, especially with the Braves I believe. He should fill that role.
Paronto was called up to replace Chris Sampson who went on the DL. We really could afford to trade a reliever or two for something as small as a bat off the bench.
I guess Hawkins is ailing, too? It would be nice to trade for a #3 starter, but I don't think Astros can afford to get rid of what little minor league talent they have. If Latroy is healthy, I would consider trading Valverde for some prospects or a starting pitcher. Last time I checked Brendan Donnelly was throwing pretty well at AAA. Don't know if that's still the case. He had a lot of experience in the pen with the Angels.
A 3rd starter would be huge and I really think if at the deadline we are right in it Wade might convince Drayton to go after a 3rd starter like Wolf last year. It shouldn't take much maybe dangle Brian Bogasevich and see what it might get you since our outfield is pretty stacked as is. I think Donnelly got released could be wrong but I read somewhere he got picked up by another team.
I checked. After posting at 2-0 recored with a 1.75 ERA and 6 saves for Round Rock, the 37 year old vet (5 years younger than Brocail) with playoff experience was released and is now piching for the Florida Marlins. How the heck did that happen?
i think anybody who says this needs to make sure they qualify it with saying that they can't afford to give up minor league talent in exchange "for a rental". i'm using halladay for the sake of argument here, and not because i believe we have a shot at him, but if we gave up 2 or 3 of our better minor leaguers for him, and made sure we could extend him, how can people think that's a bad move? you are trading unknown commodities (who have a FAR greater chance of NOT being major league studs than they do of developing into them) in exchange for a certified stud. throw in the fact that he can be re-traded down the line to recoup possibly better prospects, or we would receive compensatory picks if we lose him to free agency, and, how can anybody be strongly opposed?
Kinda agree because honestly we are in a win now mode not a rebuilding mode so if you can find a pitcher who can get us over the top I am good with trading players who might or might not work out...I go back to Wolf last year it was a shrud move by Wade and we gave up a guy who is avg at best in the minors. I really think come July31st something will happen just need to find the right guy and not overdue it!
Jordan Lyles, Bud Norris, maybe Brian Bogusevic. I think that's all we have to offer. Maybe Jason Castro. We just don't have much.
Well no Puma tonight or Bourn so Hampton needs to show up big time...I guess with the lefty they figure its a good time to let Bourn sit a night.
Maybe he asked to be because the organization wasn't going to call him up, and give him a chance elsewhere to actually pitch in the majors this season. Having a 37 year old in the minors that wasn't going to get a callup obviously the club didn't need him. I wanted him called up earlier in the year though when the bullpen was struggling.
He had the option of opting out of his contract and becoming a free agent if he (iirc) was not called up by a certain date. I believe this is a standard contract clause for players with a certain amount of big league service time who sign a minor league deal.
Except if you plan to resign him, you should expect to spend close to $20MM per year. If we're not willing to move any of Oswalt, Berkman, or Lee, we can't afford that - they already consume $50MM in payroll. You can't have $70MM tied up in 4 players and have any chance to remain competitive over the long haul. The key to building an MLB team is not the stars - you need them certainly, but lots of bad teams have stars. The good ones have cheap, quality talent surrounding them. This team can't afford more Berkmans and Oswalts. It's needs more Bourns and Pences if it expects to be good for any sustained period. That's the inherent value of prospects.
