Nieve looking awesome.. hitting 95 mph consistently on his fastball, and getting hitters to swing and miss at his slurve-type pitch.

I thought Nieve was going to be our 5th starter. If they're using him in relief does that make Sampson the 5th starter?

Nieve is going to be a bullpen guy... he projects that way because he really has only 2 above average pitches, and while he was able to have some consistent starts, he wouldn't pitch past the 6th too often (despite giving up only 3-4 runs).

Also, the club needs bullpen guys more right now... that's for damn sure.

Sampson isn't on the active roster... he was sent down for Ensberg. When they do need a 5th starter, they'll probably send down Lane again (or Borkowski).

For the umpteenth time... 7 innings, 3 hits allowed does not mean "1 hitter". Also, that game was against the worst offense in baseball (the Cubs)... without their best player.

Sampson is a nice guy to have in the minors when you need him... but he's basically a Pete Munro who's having a better than average year... nothing more yet.

You give him as many opportunities as the other "big 3" have had, and he will eventually dissapoint you as well. He's good at what he does... some guys aren't good at pitching with a big lead.... but there's a reason why his career numbers are what they are.

Remember... Dan Miceli was a dominant set up guy for us in September of 04... that's how fast fortunes can change for a bullpen pitcher.

i completely agree, but its worth giving him a shot...im not saying make him the closer/set up man, but id like to see garner run him out there a little more

granted, pitching in a 9-3 game is less stressful, but hes got pretty decent sinking action on his fastball...im just thinking out loud

We have a day off on Monday. They might just go with a 4 man rotation until next Saturday.
