This is the worst 2 game start to a season Roy has ever had. He's never had an ERA this high and has never had 2 losses (or even 1 loss and a no decision). 2005 was close. He lost the first game that season, giving up 6 ER in 6 innings. But he bounced back for game 2, giving up only 2 and getting the W.
Garner used to do this same thing, and it would infuriate me to no end. For example, he'd start Lane over Scott against left-handers, which I didn't particularly like but I understood because the bench bats need some ABs to stay sharp. But when the left-handers would go out, he'd still keep Lane in the game and wouldn't revert back to the standard lineup. Here, it's the same situation. Ausmus is catching because it's Oswalt -- but with Roy now out of the game, why not use Towles? You'd still have Cruz available to pinch-hit for the pitcher's spot. If ever a time for gap power, a runner on first with two outs trailing by a run would be it.
BrooksBall, I see your a d******d on the Astros threads as well as the Rockets game threads. What exactly did your post add to the discussion?
Well that was an extremely disappointing demonstration of how to throw away a baseball game. How frustrating
7 runs and Roy Oswalt pitching, and this team still can't win. Two days ago, Shawn Chacon gives up 2 runs in six innings opposing a mediocre starter in Randy Wolf, and this team still can't win. I know it's a small sample size and it'll even out, but this team takes bad luck to ridiculous proportions.
I had to double check that myself. Yeah, that sucks. But the Cubs only had 4 scoreless innings including the 9th. 3/8 vs. 4/9. It was that damned 5 run inning where we used 4 pitchers, 2 of which didn't even record an out.
And DAMN, NO STRIKEOUTS FROM OSWALT?!?!?!?! That has only happened ONCE in a game that he's started. That was 3 1/2 years ago and he gave up 5 ER in that game too.
