Did anybody read the comments Oswalt made the other day? He said something to the effect of "I hope we make a splash in free agency this offeseason. I didn't sign here to be mediocre."
"Everyone says we have great prospects in A ball," Oswalt said. "That's great for the organization, but I'm looking at now. I tell [owner] Drayton [McLane] all the time, 'The reason I signed here is I want to win, and let's do what we can do to win in the next two years.' Time is running out on me." http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/...t_id=6593308&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou
I actually read some other very similar quotes but it was the same message. Interesting words from Roy.
I'm waiting for another Gervacio postgame interview. Last time I saw one, it seemed like he didn't understand a word that they said to him and he was dressed like the 80s Vanilla Ice.
Top 9, come on, we need to get some offense going. Can't let the Cards beat us by 1 run every time...
Whaddya know, another pitcher having a career year under Dave Duncan... This time it's former Astro, Trever Miller.
You almost wonder, given the consistency of how he's able to do it (Pineiro is another example), if it would be worth offering him something like $3MM a year to a pitching coach. It would be a bigger bang for your buck than spending $3MM anywhere else if you can use him to turn average pitchers into quality pitchers.
I think it would be well worth it but I assume it would be nearly impossible to pry him from STL unless he has a grudge against them for trading his son.
Bah I'm sick of the Cards. They basically rebuilt themselves from their 2005 team to what they became now. Meanwhile, the Astros still haven't recovered from the post Clemens/Pettitte era.
Moehler has a 5.29 ERA and 1 more win than Oswalt. Hampton has a 5.30 ERA and as many wins. Norris has half as many wins and just came up a couple weeks ago. This hasn't been a typical Roy year by any stretch but he should have at least a few more wins.
I think we're talking about his pops, the pitching coach. Edit: Nevermind, I see what you mean. Not sure what they're going to do.
Yeah, Oswalt's retiring like next month so McLane better indeed hurry up on the signing mega stars front.
He's whining again, after the game: Hey Roy: they're not paying you $14 million to give up three runs and 10 hits in six innings. They're not paying you $14 million to post a 3.86 ERA, seven wins in 26 starts, and most likely not even make it to 200 innings for the season. Look in the mirror, first. Everyone loves to complain about Kaz, Hampton, Moehler, etc., but Oswalt pitching anywhere near his average career level would mean every bit as much of an upgrade (and in some cases, more) than any of the other moves that have been proposed. As much as people complain about Lee's contract, Lee has done more to live up to his deal this year than Oswalt has relative to his. That's not to say that Roy's wrong, or that I don't have a problem with Cooper and some of the other players, because I do. It's just that Roy comes off quite spoiled sometimes, and the words ring slightly hollow coming from him.
