Astros beat themselves up way too much. They ground into double plays, make crucial errors, and swing at way too many pitches out of the zone. The injuries on the other hand may either be bad luck or just a result of bodies getting older.
I'm pretty sure there is a relationship between those 2 points in bold. Our offensive woes are mostly due to the lack of walks and extra base hits. We actually have a higher team AVG and AVG w/ RISP then the Phillies who have scored the most runs in the NL. The reason the Phillies score so much is they slug the crap out of the ball and walk plenty. It's a myth that our problem is a lack of hitting w/ RISP. Even though it's odd to say that after the last couple of games, the truth is we hit above average in those situations and in general. We're a great singles-hitting team. We just don't draw enough walks or hit the ball hard enough relative to other teams. The poor baserunning doesn't help either.
If we lose tomorrow and even if we win the season is basically over...Wandy and Roy both on the DL is the nail in the coffin. I never thought Wandy and Roy would have gone down with injury on one road trip but so be it and now I am glad no trade was made for a wolf like pitcher. Instead I wish they had shipped out Miggy and Val for something anything but cant cry over spilled milk so bring up Paulino, Trinidad and Bazardo(keep him here all year to avoid waivers) to see what they have to setup the rotation for next year!
Is anyone ready to call it a season yet?! Ok, maybe not a season, but some should realize we arent contenders. This road trip did it for us. No Wandy, no Roy, no Berkman and well I'd like to say no problem! but unfortunately, Houston we do have a problem.
Interesting tidbit I found on mlbtraderumors.com that makes me smile considering what we have in Miggy and Val... When the Nationals decided to not trade Soriano, they landed picks from the Cubs. One of those picks ended up being Jordan Zimmermann. 2009 Soriano WAR: 0.4 2009 Zimmermann WAR: 1.9 And Soriano is owed $18M per season for each year from 2010 through 2014. Good stuff, Hendry. Posted by: scribbletone | August 01, 2009 at 01:45 PM How does it work if someone signs these guys? Do we get there draft pick or a Comp pick? I know I read that we need to offer arbitration but what happens if we dont? Nothing at all?
Ugh...no longer fun to keep track of the Stros. Hope they can turn it around, just seems there is an injury every game now. I haven't been able to watch a full game since the 2nd Mets game IIRC. Been at work every night missing them.
Roy and Wandy probably aren't going to be gone for very long. They are expected to miss one or two starts each. Berkman is eligible to come off the DL soon. There are about 60 games left to play and we are 5 out. This has been a disaster of a road trip, but it isn't exactly over yet.
it was basically over in the mets series really, lol. we've lost any momentum we had before the all-star break. bring up the young guys, bring up the entire farm. we suck.
Il be watching everynight that I can for the rest of the year because I love this team HOWEVER yes it is over...No Oz and Wandy for atleast another week and we have to play SF and Milwaukee luckly at home, even if we split the Cards go to a banged up Mets team and a minor league team in Pittsburgh. We lose tomorrow we are 6.5 game back with the probably of it getting worse the following week, after that it isn't much better and thats not even meantioning the Cubs schedule which is slightly tougher but nothing to hard.
We have several more chances at the Cards later in the year when we should have our hosses back. Also, the Cards and Cubs will beat up on each other several more times during the year. It will be tough, but it certainly is within the realm of possibility.
Hope so...I love Septemeber Pennant Race baseball so atleast something to look forward to besides watching prospects would be oh so nice!
Ah... we can't buy a break this roadtrip. DPs, poor in clutch situations, crippled bullpen, suddenly injured starters...
brianmctaggart Oswalt threw pitches off flat ground and said he feels at about 75 percent. He's aiming to start Saturday. Will throw off mound Monday Good news FINALLY!
