Law of averages. Wandy was bound to get hit on at some point.

Sigh. Season seems lost. We need a serious run like the Rockies had 2 seasons back but I just don't sense that it will happen.

10 runs though? Nah. Even great pitchers don't get shelled that hard in bad stars.

Santana had one about a month ago. I actually watched that game. cardpire linked to the bosxcore earlier in this thread.

Weaver is one of the Angels top dogs. He got shelled tonight.

I believe Verlander got shelled earlier this season. Edit: just checked, he got shelled twice in his first 4 starts.

It happens. It's never a good thing but it happens to some elite pitchers occasionally.

how is that lil step thing that Gervacio does not a balk? i mean i've seen balks called when pitches barely even move their leg.

Gervacio looks like Beenie Man without dreads.

I think even JD mentioned that he got beat up pretty good one start and someone told him Big Unit had given up like 11 runs that same day...made him feel better lol

    Adam Everett OPS

    2004: .703
    2005: .654
2006 (last full season as a regular): .642

    Kaz Matsui OPS

    2009: .638

He's having an awful, awful, awful year. In fact, other than his time in Colorado and his partial season last year, he's been bad since coming to America. We way overpaid for his services @ $5.5 million.

Wandy got hit hard today, the Brewers have a potent offense, but wow...

Sorry guys, this season is over for the Stros. The Cards will win the division, either the Giants or Cubs will win the Wild Card.

I wouldn't count the Rockies and Marlins out for the WC. The Cubs are 4 games back and Zambrano and Ramirez both have injuries.

I've never regularly watched a mlb manager mishandle a bullpen like Coop has this season.

You'll get no argument from anyone on this board with that one, lol. Anal Tear has been terrible since he came here. I wasn't wild about the signing at the time, but he's been a dud at 2B. Who would have thought Chris Burke/Adam Everett would have higher OBP?

If you think that the bullpen woes came from having guys pitch a couple of innings every few games, then you are either not paying attention or haven't the foggiest idea what you are talking about.

For quite a stretch, Arias was pitching damned near every night. When he didn't pitch, he was warmed up in the pen. Hawkins, same thing. Byrdak, same thing. If you do that for a few weeks, a guy will get dead arm. It happens.

Sorry if you don't understand that pitching mechanics and arm stress has changed significantly since 1969.

our bullpen woes haven't stemmed from our pen being overextended, they have come from having terrible pitchers in the pen. period.

there is no proof that alberto arias got "dead arm". he seemed to get generally the same movement on his pitches on the games that i saw him get touched up a bit, that he was getting in the games that he was avoiding giving up runs. every time a relief pitcher gets hit, it isn't automatically due to overuse. arias was having a phenomenal run, but the fact remains that he's had only a few innings of major league experience prior to that. coming down do earth is just as likely of a reason for his recent minor struggles as "dead arm" is. as much as we wanted him to, it was a bit unrealistic to think that he became a gem and a stud overnight. even when he wasn't allowing runs, he was constantly getting into huge jams and miraculously working his way out of them night in and night out. it just finally caught up with him.

byrdak, sampson, wesley wright, jeff fulchino, doug brocail....use em as much or as little as you want - they still, for all intents and purposes, suck. it isn't as simple as use em too much and they get dead arm, but use them sparingly and keep them fresh, and they are world beaters.

You can say that... but if the "intent and purpose" is to pitch well, then Fulchino and Byrdak have done that, this season. A bullpen guy with an ERA in the mid-3s doesn't suck, by any means. A terrible pitcher doesn't produce like that.

whether they are good or not is really besides the point...i'm just saying that there is no certifiable proof whatsoever that any of these guys have been overworked and have "dead arm", and that should be the last of cooper's or the astros' concerns. middle relievers have their ups and downs throughout the course of the season. you can't chalk up every poor performance to "dead arm".
