The only thing I can think of is that he thinks Sampson needs another days rest after pitching 3 innings the other day in Pitt. Other than that, I can't see any good logic in it. I'll be interested to see who goes out there tomorrow if we can pull it out tonight.

Definitely. Clearly, it's better to have a player who hit .247 with 183 strikeouts and only 23 walks in 470 at-bats in AAA than it is to have a player hitting .348 with 7 pinch-hit RBIs in the month of September.
