Well, they're swinging at hittable pitches from a pitcher who is throwing quite a few strikes. The alternative is to get behind 0-2 or 1-2. Now, perhaps they can get better at fouling off or spoiling pitches that are just not what they want... that's advanced-user-level stuff right there. Professional hitter stuff.
