Exactly. A pitcher with really nothing else but heat is going to be hit eventually. A pitcher with heat and a change or good slider is going to have batters guessing and off-kilter. A pitcher with a variety of off-speed pitches that doesn't keep them down or doesn't have enough speed of movement difference isn't going to throw batters off. Really, almost any pitcher is really only as good as their command and usage of two pitches. From what I've seen, having command of three pitches, one each in the 90s, 80s, and 70s makes a pitcher super hard.
Liriano hasn't been good by any stretch of the imagination, but J.D. Davis's unnecessary intervention led to those 2 runs.
Ugh, he shouldn't be there if can't make that play. That's a cardinal foul to miss that play as a third baseman, because your shortstop isn't running forward to field it. They're relying on you, and if you miss it or botch it, they can't do anything except hope they can back you up. Two runs because of that. Davis, your two home runs in a row are long gone. Step it up, start getting normal hits again, and field like a pro, or GTFO.
Grrr. Beltran's not getting his body into his swing. His swing may be simpler, but he's just using his upper body, and he's not getting enough power from it. McCann has the same problem. Finally, a flood alert that actually blocked something I don't care about: a worthless Davis at-bat.
