I think that depends on how the race turns out. Also Trump himself believes on stage with his oppenents he can defeat them given how 2016 went and my impression is that he feels he won the 2020 debates.
People love what Trump is because they love the image he has created. He's been building a brand for decades and his success is based almost exclusively on the marketing of himselfs (Trump Business, Trump Casinos, Trump Airlines... ).

This goes again though to that especially in our current culture marketing and politics have significant overlap. Obama's 2008 campaign was noted by even many Democrats as light on substance but heavy on image.

Even if behind in polls I doubt it given he doesn't value polls. Against DeSantis, again I doubt it because DeSantis would likely beat him in a debate - DeSantis is Trump without the bluster and with the understanding of policy. If they do debate it will be early when there are many people still in the race and not head to head.

Trump is very charismatic, but he's not a very good marketer. All his brands failed partly because they are poorly marketed. Even back then, most of the PR he got was simply because he was rich and was a narcissist that loved to do interviews - and was very charismatic doing it. In the 80's he did all these big things that flopped but it got him media attention and lots of opportunity to be in front of the camera. That's how he became famous. No one knew anything about his finances or how successful he was but he just kept getting in front of the camera. In that sense he created a persona for himself. Was it marketing brilliance? No. It was just him being him. He hasn't changed in 50 years. Same person, same approach, same values. The media gave him this image of a master dealmaker because of his charisma and he ran with it.

That would make sense for other politicians but I'm not sure it does for Trump. He seems to relish the chance to get in the face, in some cases literally, of his opponents.
What you're describing is marketing. He's a terrible at running businesses but he still get's people to buy his crap.

Not if he looks bad or can't interrupt. He wants to debate but only on his terms.

As someone who's been a marketer for 20 years now, I respectfully disagree. People don't buy his crap by the way, all his products were failures.

Considering how he’s still taking in millions and even here there are people still defending him there’s a lot of people buying his crap.

He's a great salesman, which is very different from marketing. His real estate is just him buying **** and putting his last name on it, and decorating everything in a grossly overdone way. His rise was because the actual views he espouses are very very popular on the right. So you could say he's an opportunist. But it's an insult to anyone marketing to call him a great marketer.

So we'll just have to disagree on this one, I just don't think of celebrities as marketers and their personas as a product.

Yeah I think we're talking about different things. "Salesmanship" and "marketing" to me have a lot of overlap.

They are connected but do not overlap. The ad for the snake oil is marketing. The label on the bottle is marketing. The stand set up is marketing. The guy giving the pitch is sales.

Except in the case of Trump the ad, the label and the man are all the same.

Trump brands are all about him personally. When he's selling Trump Steaks he's selling himself.

First sentence is true, second one is not. I know that sounds contradictory but the Trump brand does not equal Trump for the most part.

Yes for some it does, but for most people it does not. Trump Steaks, Trump Airlines, Trump X have all been colossal failures. It demonstrates his ability to slap his name on a product to make it sell is actually very limited. Trump Hotels is associated by some to be with Trump but most people don't really care if Trump owns them or not (he for the most part, does not own them).

His politics isn't the Trump brand, that's not what people love. They love him. They don't give a **** about his products - none of which have made a revival with his presidency. This just goes to show how decoupled the Trump brand is from the man.
