    Dusty this. Dusty that. The offense is abysmal.

    I believe the only off day is between games 2 and 3. So there would be games 5 consecutive days if a series goes 7. Usually your game 3 starter would be in line to start game 7 on normal rest but that won't be the case this year. A 5th starter is needed somewhere; either game 7 or earlier in the series if they give one of the first 2 starters an extra rest day.

    There's 1 day off between games 2 & 3 and then 1 day off between games 5 & 6

    Depending on how it leads into WS, you don't need 5 starters.

    ALCS does have 4 consecutive days play, which really doesn't make sense to me.

    They changed it this year to shorten the playoffs because of the lockout. World Series is the normal way but the Divisonal Round and the AL and NL Championships have less off days.

    • The best-of-three Wild Card Series will be played on three consecutive days. There is no off-day within the series.
    • There are no off days between Games 4 and 5 of the LDS, or between Games 5 and 6 of the LCS. Travel could be a nightmare should teams on opposite coasts meet (like, say, Dodgers vs. Mets in the NLCS).
    • The World Series follows the usual 2-3-2 format with off-days between Games 2 and 3, and Games 5 and 6.

    If the ALCS goes 7 games, they will play 5 consecutive days from 10/22 through 10/26. If the NLCS goes 7 games, they will play 5 consecutive days from 10/21 through 10/25.

    The WS will have two breaks.

    Don't you just love the schedule?

    Would you have taken him out down 2-1 in the second inning? Your original post suggests that giving up the home run to Trout should have triggered the "short leash". But that home run is what made the score 5-1. You are essentially arguing that after falling behind 5-1 Dusty should have put Urquidy on a short leash lest he give up five runs.

    Ah, sorry. I understand. It's more about who is making the decisions that the actual decisions being made.

    Wait.... what? In no way, shape or form do Astro starters constantly give up 4, 5, 6 runs.

    Every single starter has an ERA under 4. Regardless of what one thinks about Dusty, he has managed the pitching aspect of the games well. Sure, there are the occasional games where he didn't bring in who fans think he should have brought in or, in retrospect, left a reliever in too long or too short but show me one manager who doesn't do that.

    Exactly. I don't think there's any way to interpret the Astros results as the starters consistently giving up 4+ runs.

    Over the last month dating to Aug 10th, the club went 18-10 (.644 winning %)

    In those 10 losses:
    8/10: Verlander: 6IP, 3ER --> Quality Start (QS) and No-decision (ND)
    8/15: Urquidy: 7.2IP, 1 ER --> QS, in-line for the win but ultimate ND as Montero blew the save and took the L
    8/16: Verlander: 7IP, 3ER --> QS, ND
    8/19: McCullers: 5IP, 3 ER, L
    8/20: Javier: 6IP, 1 ER --> QS, ND
    8/26: McCullers: 5IP, 0ER, ND
    8/27: Urquidy: 5IP, 3ER, L
    9/3: Garcia: 7 IP, 1ER, QS, ND
    9/6: Valdez, 6.2IP, 4R, 2ER --> QS and L
    9/10: Urquidy: 5IP, 6 R/ER --> L

    So out of 10 losses over the last month, 1 starter gave up more than 4 ER's (last night). Another starter gave up 2ER/4R's (Valdez on 9/6), but still threw a quality start. In fact out of those 10 losses, only in 3 did the starter take the loss and on the flip side SIX of the 10 were quality starts.

    Sometimes you just lose. That was the most loss'y loss we've had in a month:
    -lost to ace, runs driven in by the other team's generational talent, game was on national TV

    .... but it was just one loss. There are no great themes or trends to be pulled out from it.

    These are not the line-ups I would choose, but they're getting closer. McCormick out against a lefty again? Hensley out? These two should start against every lefty. They can get their rest against righties. Vasquez is good. Dubon is NEVER good.

    Maybe Saint ()usty can sprinkle some fairy dust on the line-up.

    Right... in most seasons every team will win 54 and lose 54. There will be some clunkers. It's what you do in those other 54 that sets you apart and the Astros should be at least 46-8 in those other 54.
