Am I the only one who disagrees with the gay/straight voting habits premise? I mean, if it really made that big of a deal, then wouldn't Adam have been voted off like 10th, like Rudy, the latin gay male stripper from 2 seasons ago? Seriously, my wife says it was a gay thing, and the Sports Junkies (DC radio morning talk) said it this morning that it was middle-America putting their stamp on American Idol. Seriously? I think this thinking is outdated. It's like calling Yao Ming soft or the Nuggets defense terrible. http://www.dialidol.com/asp/predictions/geopredictions.asp Don't just look at who won each state, but also look at the margins. It's extremely close everywhere. And the final total tally was an extremely close margin. http://www.dialidol.com/asp/predictions/Predictions.asp I mean, hasn't it been common knowledge that Adam is a flamboyant theater gay glam rock guy? It's been known for months. It's not like Adam has been losing votes. A 51 million to 50 million final vote tally says to me that they're both very popular, and you know what, they're both like-able personalities.
Damn, I was really looking forward to reading this thread this morning. What a disappointment to see that it’s turned into a holy war. Thanks, cowboy… Anyway, I haven’t actually watched the show yet but it’s impossible to DVR it and not see who won. It was all over Facebook. Stupid status updates…. To be honest, I didn’t like anyone from the finals this year. Maybe Allison, but the next album I buy from an AI alumni will be the first. The only one I can stand to listen to is Underwood. Doesn’t hurt that she’s EXTREMELY easy on the eyes. Personally, I don’t think anyone will even remember Adam in another month or so. Kris either. Maybe if Adam joins a band (and doesn’t call it Lambert…) and they make a rock record, we will hear from him again. I actually liked that YouTube video of his band that someone posted earlier in this thread. If he were smart, he would just keep doing that. Maybe he can be the next Marilyn Manson. Or perhaps he can call himself Man Gaga. Kris, there’s already 20 guys on the radio that sound just like that, so what’s the point of having one more? Pretty crappy season overall. Not sure why I continued to watch.
I agree, it's not a big deal and I don't think it's what caused Kris to win, tweens are.. IMO tweens are and have always driven the vote on the show..
To date, Daughtry is the only Idol contestant that I've bought any music from (singles on iTunes) and it will probably stay that way. I like David Cook and depending on what direction he takes with his career I could maybe see buying his music. Carrie Underwood is very talented but doesn't really appeal to me a whole lot. I'll listen on the radio occasionally. Same for Clarkson, except less talented. I think Kris definitely has talent and deserved to win, but so did Adam. Ultimately neither will appeal to me in the longrun...I can see Kris doing Jason Mraz/Maroon 5 type music and there's no telling what Adam will do, but I definitely grew tired of his voice after a while. He's much better on the softer, controlled songs.
Cowboy_Bebop: For someone who thinks the show is "stupid" and doesn't really care about it, you sure don't act it. You and Rowdy (but more you) have dominated the page before this one with this back and forth that just made my head hurt. At any rate, I wanted Adam to win and I made no secret about that. I was never that impressed with Kris and I think he is the worst AI winner since Taylor Hicks. Now, he will probably sell more records than Hicks and probably even more than Adam; but like ima said, he sounds like about 20 other male singer/songwriter types that play a guitar like John Mayer/Jason Mraz/Jack Johnson/etc. I am not going to say that Adam will sell more records than Kris because I think Kris will be marketed completely different plus you have all the teeny bopper crowd that will lap up his stuff. Yet, Adam really needs to be the lead singer of some kickass rock band, not just his own band but some band like a KISS or even Queen (even though they do have Paul Rodgers who is great in his own right). If Adam does go the route of having his own band and being the frontman, I sure hope that he won't put out inane, generic drivel that Daughtry has done. I swear that whenever I hear a Daughtry song, I can't tell if it is by Daughtry, Nickelback, or even, blech, Creed.
OMG that is so true and I never thought about it like that before. I think that's why I like Adam so much. He is unique. All of these other tools, including, Kris sound like 15 other singers that we have out there now.
On a serious side, here , here , here ... There are many more out there but I have came across but never bookmark them and not that easy to find again since they are all over the places and you jsut have to remember what songs that's being cover by them... So do your own research...
on your first link, i wasn't able to listen to the #1 person..vid wouldn't load. #2 (marie digby) has released an album and it was made known that her youtube releases were professionally produced and released on youtube as a marketing attempt (that worked well) #3 was good and I haven't heard of her. #'s 4-10 weren't any better than the AI contestants, and most of them were worse than the top 2 Your 2nd link apparently already is on iTunes and has an album out. So I don't think that qualifies. 3rd link was posted somewhere else. It's good. Not a tough song. I don't think the top 4 on AI would have a problem doing as well as he did on it.
I do find it kind of funny that you are calling Kris boring, and yet you post someone doing an acoustic cover to a rap song (Link 3) to support this argument. Kris has already demonstrated that he can do this very well. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/r8D8eMGL328&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/r8D8eMGL328&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
The guy can sing but he's not bringing anything new to the table for me. Like I said, there are a whole bunch of covers on Youtube by others maybe almost just as good and sometimes better. Adam on the other hand have some nice range except when he's screeching. He's the guy I'm most curious about of what direction he's going to take.
I had heard the Terra Naomi songs from before she got a recording contract. I'd buy her CD before anyone who has been on Idol, but then, I'm less inclined to pop music. But I do find Idol, as a show, entertaining.
I'm new to this forum and someone told me bout the hangout thread and then saw teh american idol topic. i tried reading back but its just wayyyy too much. I'll try and make this as brief as I can but doubt it will happen hehe. First and foremost I'm an Anoop Desai fan! Since day 1 in his audition until now, present and future. I believe he has one of the best voices from this season. He was not given the proper respect and was thrown under the bus way too often. his genre isnt cohesive with the AI stage which why i believe the judges and america had trouble connecting with him. they saw him as a wannabe...but why? cause of his looks? they wanted this ready made star and they wanted to put anoop in this little box and say THIS IS WHO HE IS. he didn't fit into their lil mold of an image so therefore...never given respect. Anyhooo. thats who i was rooting for.
My 2nd pick was Kris Allen. Since top 36 i predicted that this kid would be one of the most successful artists of ALL AI contestants. To say he sounds just like everyone else, well sorry to say but i guess you dont know your music. and then someone said daughtry sounds just like everyone else also? i mean come on...his voice is unique and i can EASILY distinguish creed, nickelback, etc. but then again, im a music fanatic. Kris brought a simple, pure and smooth vocal from the first peformance. He rearranged songs and made them his own. His voice/genre is whats "IN" right now and he's easy to market. I really enjoyed his music...while his genre is in the likes of jason mraz, john mayer etc he does not sound like them. come on ppl open ur ears LOL i can tell each one of those artists apart from one another.
as far as adam is concerned..the dude is mad talented. He's been in the entertainment business for 10 YEARS. so he knows exactly how to put on a good SHOW. which is exactly what he's good at. he's very theatrical. not dissing his chops because he obviously has it. Now, is he current? I dont think so. Can he put an album out that will sound relevant and mainstream and not theatrical. hmmm im not sure...but if he manages to bring back 80's rock and make it the NEW THING...then watch out america. Honestly though, i dnt think its gonna happen. Maybe i'll be eating my words in a few months tho.
Well let me clarify - push come to shove, I can tell the difference between a Daughtry song compared to a Nickelback song and a Creed song; however, their songs all sound the same and have similar riffs. There is no variety whatsoever in any of their songs - it is the same song over and over and over...I just don't see any innovation there, nothing that grabs me. It's too cookie-cutter and nowhere adventurous like say a Radiohead. Granted that is my opinion but that is what I feel. And I'm someone who will listen to everyone from Springsteen (currently listening to) to Parliament to Miles Davis to Primal Scream to Queen to Talk Talk to Kate Bush to many others. I guess I just don't have much patience with "pop-rock". Once again, I would venture most people can tell the difference between a Jason Mraz song compared to a Jack Johnson song or John Mayer song. But it is an oversaturation of a specialized genre in the market. I mean it is getting to the point where guys like Kris are a dime a dozen. The guy is a solid musician and he definitely has talent but he is not going to release anything that will make me go "WOW". I guess my expectations are too high, but I can honestly say that someone like Kelly Clarkson - she is pop but she is not only catchy but she is someone who is memorable. I really don't see Kris being a memorable artist.
