Mallick is an amazing director. His use of cinematography, sound (or knowing when to tone it down),and abstract talents have always been genius. That said when a film comes along and raises the bar, bringing fundemental changes to how a war movie is made it derserves attention. The first 45 minutes are cutting edge. Technical advancements are not to be discounted. Look at Citizen Kane.Even though it was blackballed because of Hurst...later came it's just due.I'm not putting Saving Private Ryan on that level, but these are films that help movies evolve. Politically - Just look who votes on them.If I'm not mistaken Shindler's List had won the year before. You have a built in dislike for Spielberg in the Academy and they sure as heck were not going to give it to him again. (and not for SPR) As far as this year's nominees,I've seen most of them...No Country For Old Men should roll.
I stand corrrected. In fact I realized it and was going to edit, but you beat me to it. It's just that some innovative films are rare and usually not appreciated fully until later in their shelf life.
I agree with that. I think most people thought Saving Private Ryan should've won over Shakespeare in Love.
Atonement was a pretty good film after actually watching it the other week. I think it will win best picture. There will be Blood is a close second in my book. I would be really surprised if No Country for Old Men actually won best picture. I think the only thing it wins is Best Supporting Actor with Javier Bardem. There will be Blood and Atonement should sweep the other categories as well. Others: Actress Leading Role- Ellen Page Actress Supporting Role- Tilda Swinton I just realized I haven't seen many of the Documentary or Foreign Language films up for nomination this year.
Best Director - Joel Coen and Ethan Coen : No Country for Old Men Best Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis : There Will Be Blood Best Actress - Marion Cotillard : La Vie en Rose Best Supporting Actor - Tom Wilkinson : Michael Clayton Best Supporting Actress - Amy Ryan : Gone Baby Gone Best Original Screenplay - Lars and the Real Girl : Nancy Oliver Best Adapted Screenplay - No Country for Old Men Best Picture - No Country for Old Men
I will be flipping between the Oscars and the Bulls-Rockets tonight. DDL should win for There Will Be Blood and Bardem win for NCFOM. I think No Country will win best picture...it was just superb. I don't really care about most categories though. I'll probably watch the game and then the Tivo'd parts of interest of the Oscars.
The Oscars is always a borefest to me. I only watched the last 40 minutes of it. BTW, what kind of name is Diablo? Kinda of a weird name huh! Juno was a good movie though.
Is anybody watching the Jimmy Kimmel after Oscars special? He just debuted the "I'm F****ing Ben Affleck" video in response to the Sarah Silverman "I'm F***ing Matt Damon" vid. There was so much bleeping, I have no idea what was being sung. Lots of stars involved, even Harrison Ford. Should be online soon. Oh, I loved No Country, but I think There Will Be Blood was slightly more deserving for director and best film.
