Because things like this happen and is accepted strategy. Maybe not as egregious as what these players were doing but it is undeniable that athletes and teams don't always bring their best efforts. Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte even said so after their preliminary swims for the 400 IM.

And if I was there I probably would've booed them too. I mean if I go to an NBA game and they just play scrubs I am probably going to boo also. None of that is illegal and I have yet to see a citation that what these teams did was illegal according to Badmitton rules.

Except there have been several incidents of athletes or teams choosing not to play a match, last week the North Koreans soccer refused to take the field for more than an hour. To my knowledge the IOC hasn't banned them. As I said before I don't like tanking and fully agree this wasn't in the spirit of competition but out of so many things that you see all the time that are not in the spirit of competition it seems very hypocritical to single these teams out.

Also if they are going to sanction someone why sanction these players? Why not sanction the coach who told them to do this or this or the organization?

No, but seeing the size of these players I wish they were. On a tangent my dad did get a chance to be considered for the Taiwanese Olympic team back in the 1960's for of all things skiing. He never made the cut though.

Good points. Also the NYT piece pointed out that the Japanese woman soccer team played scrubs and controled the ball to not win the game against South Africa yesterday so they can avoid the US or France. The Japanese players even admitted that's the instruction from the coach.

However, let me ask you this: is it your position that so long as it's not for gambling, any form of game throwing in the Olympics is ok? Let's say if the Japanese players kick the ball into their own goal, would that be ok?

My line is probably right at what those Badminton players did.

Also, I want to point out Olympics is different from professional leagues like NBA or NFL. Although I wish the political components of the game could be reduced to the minimum, the Olympics is a competition at National level where the pride of entire Nation is at stake. Forget about IOC rules for a second, I don't feel too proud of those Chinese players for what they did as they were representing China in the Olympics. Yes, I know anything goes to win, but there gotta be some stopping point like not make it so blatant. Many other posters say that was ok, but there are a lot of other people including myself felt that was not right, and we don't want that to be assoicated with Chinese atheletes and China. Even in China, the current poll of Sina shows almost 70% voted support the IOC decision.

As long as within the rule, anyone can make an effort for improving their own chance of winning. Everyone should be entitled the right of improving their own life, within the rules. Capitalism, thats it is.

But why Chinese players? Twice the Korean players were caught and suspended. Whats up with all the China hating?

LOL That's because there is another pair in the game that will probably get a medal at least if not gold. Just watch what the reaction will be if both pairs got booted.

    Lol.
Commentator: It's impressive to see members of the men's team supporting the women...
(Camera shows players texting instead of watching the women's basketball team.)

maybe its because China was the favorite team and the top team.. its a lot more fun to hate on the top teams.. See the Miami Heat, Lakers, Yankees, etc effect... Teams that are just mediocre are not even worth the time to hate.. Take for example the bobcats.. does anyone on here really hate the bobcats?

None of the yankie girls look womanish enough. Hooker does sound obscene, but not look like what it supposes to mean.

I got tons of boners from 2 or 3 of the Chinese girls and I am straight and male:eek:

    That's just me.
