Plenty of other sports have overtimes and force their athletes to win based on their physical abilities. Could you imagine if tied basketball games were settled on field goal percentages? They're athletes...let them settle it like athletes should and if they can't handle the pressure then they don't deserve to win. And can you imagine the drama that would bring. You both were almost perfect and now you have to do it all over again. That would be exciting to watch.
An expert would know that falling on your knees is a 0.8-point deduction, instead of a 10-point deduction ... landing is not the only thing in vault, otherwise everyone would just jump onto the vault, then jump off to get a perfect score.
The scoring system was put out in 2005. Deductions and difficulty awards are clearly stated. If someone wants a better shot a winning a medal, then he/she should practice more difficult routines. There is plenty of time to prepare routines that maximizes your expected score. That is how the current system works. Judges simply follow the guidelines.
I'd take 17 more gold medals over 5 more medals overall. Not like these are the final numbers though.
that's true. oh well, we'll see what they do in the future. the current system is creating too much room for controversies.
I dont care how good your routine/vault is, or how hard. If you fall down at the landing(not just a step - even a big one) then you failed and your score should reflect that. As for the uneven bars. Nastia's execution score was low, and the bronze medalist from China should have been a bit higher on her score. Would her appropriate score have beaten Nastia's appropriate score?? I dont know. But the wrong Chinese girl got the bronze.
Here's something we can get pissed off over together - the IOC dropping baseball and softball because crappy Euro countries can't compete. Learn to play, learn to play.
that's your opinion. if that's the case, they should have told them before the competition. the current system encourages them to do harder vaults. why would they even bother to do easy stuff when they know they have no chance of winning even if they do it good?
what are we dropping baseball and softball for? a couple more badminton medals. how the hell can a country win 8 medals in badminton when in basketball, the second most popular sport in the world, you can win a maximum of 2. we actually compete and do well in events the rest of the world gives a crap about, like swimming, track and field, and gymnastics. enjoy that one run.
Then everyone would do easy ass jumps and things would get stale quickly because there is no advantage to taking a risk.
Oh and did anybody else see the US/China baseball game? China beaned 7 batters (most or all intentionally), giving one player a concussion.
Silver and bronze may look pretty, but they are basically just consolation prizes for losers. If you think being the best loser is as good as being the winner, then good for you.
it looked like they were intentionally tackling all the catchers. besides, China has an US manager, who knows what he is teaching them there.
I love how you ASSUMED the objective of the sport as if you are an expert. Landing on your knees then you are -0.8. If your difficulty is +1 more than others, other being constant (execution), then yes....... the more difficult one landing on her knees would still win the easier one landing perfectly. Seriously is it too hard to understand? The scoring system is PRE-DETERMINED. It's ok if you feel the "scoring system" is unfair, you can complain about it BEFORE the competition or even boycott it if you like. The judges are just doing it by rules! Dont whine about the judges...... same applies to the tie-breaker too!!!
why are baseball and softball even olympic sports? I mean, cricket is played by more than 1 billion people across all the continents except for maybe South America, but yet it's not an olympic sport.
