Yes, that's because US news outlet continues to list it by total medals. While the rest of the world ranks by gold. As basically the sole user of English measurements while the rest of the world uses metrics, this isn't exactly surprising. I don't get this. Are you saying these aren't sports? Actually, I personally don't consider shooting a sport either in the same way I really never viewed golf as a sport. But I see no logic with the other events. I mean, I know to Americans there is no sport outside basketball/American football/baseball... but surely this is taking it overboard. Btw, the US pretty much got half of its medals in swimming. I really don't think we can talk smack about China dominating "non-sports". Not when Phelps accounts for 40% of our gold count.
Thats because US sites like to put the US at the top No other site in the world has "total medals" as the criteria for ranking the countries.
What a difference a weekend makes: On Friday: Gold Silver Bronze Total Canada 0 0 0 0 On Sunday: Gold Silver Bronze Total Canada 2 1 4 7
Do you have a link ? I have always noticed it listed as total medals even when the US wasn't in first.
Of course a point system would be best. Does anyone honestly think 17 gold is the same as 17 bronze? But only counting gold is too extreme as well.
you must suck at sports. how is weightlifting not a sport? it requires muscle and technic. shooting requires concentration, same thing as shooting a basketball, it needs form. not even going to bother with badminton, diving, judo. you are ignorant and a sore loser if you really believe what you said. sad.
Why have the competitions at all if the medal count means nothing? Why keep scores? Everyone just participate that should be good enough then. I mean give the endorsement deals to the last place finishers instead of the winners, that should be fair.
You have the competition to prove you are the best at your sport. It is pretty apparent that many cultures don't value some of the medals won anyway. Do you really think Michael Phelps cared the same about the U.S. basketball team winning gold or himself? Mongolia won their first gold medal ever and the country went crazy, you think they give a damn about final medal counts?
No, but people in China, Russia, USA and Germany certainly do care about medal counts. Even countries like Korea, Japan, England cares a lot about their standing in the medal count, countries like Mongolia are not sports powers, if they are they certain will care. Do the Dolphin fans care about who won their divisions last year? Probably not much, they just want a win, any win!
WTF?!! JUDO is more of a sport than at least half of the other Olympic events. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/R43op-tg-_E&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/R43op-tg-_E&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> It just happens that the US can't get a gold medalist in it.
That's what I am saying. Not every country cares about the medal count but every country cares about what events their athletes are in and hopes they win them. Medal count is really pointless except for bragging rights and that's it.
Talk about being ignorant, this ain't the Comets basketball, its the Olympics, which the whole WORLD participates in.
For spectators, points or medal count or NBA championships are indeed bragging rights only. What else does a NBA title to Rockets fans? Is that going to help us land a better job or house? As for whether some countries care about the medal count, most of the countries aren't in position to care about that at all. Once they are, they will. For instance, when China won the first ever Olympics medal in LA, people are excited about it. When they won more medals, as the game proceeded, they started to care.
You might want to take off those myopic glasses for a moment. The world doesn't revolve around the NFL.
