Sorry but I think that's just a misconception. While true, the system is not scored out of 10 points anymore, you still have an execution score worth 10. You nail your routine, you should be rewarded justly. If you can award perfect 10s in diving (which they have in these Olympics) you should reward 10s in gymnastics.

And just so you don't think I'm biased here, the Chinese girl that just went on floor looked perfect to me. Maybe she doesn't get a 10 but it should be close (9.8 or 9.9) but she probably won't get higher than a 9.5 on execution.

And I was right, she got a 9.0 on execution; so she had enough mistakes to warrant 1 whole point of deductions? I don't buy that. Maybe if they could inform us as to what all the possible deductions are I'd feel better; but as it is, you see someone do a vault and they are awesome except for a little hop on the landing, they get a .1 deduction for a landing and then .9 worth of mystery penalties.

If you win something, you are definitely going to be rewarded hugely by your country, especially those ones broke long drought for some countries, i.e. Singapore or India. Endorsement is another great way for cashing in, and some private enterprises in China promised to reward some mdealists as well. But being merely participants, I don't think you will get paid greatly, but the experience being part of Olympics is a great enough reward, IMHO.

The most embarrassing American athlete so far is sprinter Torri Edwards, who not only finished last in 100m final, but also had the team to file a protest because she believed she false-started.

I mean, she started earlier than anybody else, and finished last, and she still wanted to file a protest? unreal.

does chung fei get a courage bonus for not falling all the way down there or something? the difficulty of catching yourself from falling must be pretty high.
